Principal's Report

Dear Parents, Teachers and Students,

Happy Holidays
Well, we’ve just about made it to the holidays, and it’s been a massive term for everyone! I have a great big shout-out of thanks and congratulations to all the students and families who have worked so hard to make a success of remote learning, whether at home or at school. I’m so grateful for your efforts, patience, stamina and resilience — you are all amazing!
Of course, my thanks and admiration also go out to the incredible staff of Mt Carmel School, who have persevered through very challenging circumstances, with professionalism and dedication.

It was lovely to see so many students back at school on Monday, even if it was only for one day. My thanks to all in the community, including extended families and friends, who have shared so many kind words of support for the school in response to my Remote Learning Hokey Pokey. To be honest, I’m quite stunned by the response (under the current circumstances it may be considered insensitive to say that it’s gone viral, it was reportedly played on the ABC this morning) but I’m very happy that it’s brought a bit of joy to everyone as we close out the term.
It is too soon to know exactly what the return to school for Term 4 will look like, but please be assured that as soon as any details become available I will share them with the community via a Compass post. Either way, remotely or face-to-face, Term 4 commences for students on Tuesday 5 October.

Kindergarten Orientation Postponed
Kindergarten Orientation was scheduled to commence in Week 2 of Term 4 but, like so many other things, we are not able to hold orientation events at this time. We do consider Kindergarten Orientation to be a vital step in each child’s transition to Primary School and will do all we can to ensure that they (and their families) are as ready as possible for the milestone event of starting ‘Big School’. Again, I will share details of any developments as soon as new dates for Kindergarten Orientation can be confirmed.

Staffing News
It’s with sadness that I pass on the news that Mrs Shoring will be finishing at Mt Carmel at the end of this term to take up a position as Director of Early Learning on Rossi (previously, Yass Little Learners). Whilst this is very sad news for us, I congratulate Sheree on her appointment and wish her all the very best for the exciting challenges ahead. I am very grateful to Sheree for the wonderful and dedicated work she has done for Mt Carmel, both as a classroom teacher and as Aboriginal Contact Teacher for the school. Sheree is very disappointed that the she is unable to be with face-to-face with 1SS this week to say goodbye to everyone in person. From the start of next term, Miss Tara Cassidy will be teaching 1SS four days a week, with Mrs Kaely Jol teaching one day.

School Holiday Opportunity
On each Wednesday of the school holidays, local poet and performer, Robin Sykes, will be running a free Virtual to Actual Performance Poetry workshop. The workshop will provide an opportunity for students to explore poetry, develop performance techniques and work on writing style.

Sessions with Robyn are FREE Online Via Zoom are open to anyone in the Southern Tablelands Arts or Eastern Riverina Region. Places are limited, so if you are interested, BOOK NOW!

May God’s peace be in your families,
