Principal Report

Road Safety
Today the K-2 Classes visited a very informative safety incursion about keeping safe around vehicles, hosted by the Georgina Josephine Foundation, to learn about how little a driver can actually see from inside their vehicle.

It is extremely important that, as parents, we model safe behaviour around traffic. Teachers on afternoon supervision frequently report concerning behaviours to me, including crossing the road between buses, calling children across the road rather than collecting them, and riding rather than walking bikes or scooters across roads. Safety around our school is everybody’s responsibility.

Transport NSW recommends that children should hold an adult’s hand, not only when crossing roads but whenever around vehicles, until at least the age of 8 and be closely supervised around traffic until at least the age of 10.

Injuries to young children often happen:

  • when a child is walking with an adult, but not holding hands
  • when a child is close to home, playing in a quiet street or driveway that is considered safe from traffic
  • when a supervising adult is unaware a child has slipped away
  • when a child is playing in an unfenced play area
  • when a relative or family friend is driving off or returning home.

Boys are twice as likely to be killed or injured as pedestrians than girls.

More information about the Georgina Josephine Foundation can be found at http://www.gjfoundation.com.au and about Traffic Safety and Children, at http://www.kidsandtraffic.mq.edu.au.

2020 Planning
A request to any K-5 families moving from Mt Carmel at the end of this year: it would greatly assist our preparation for 2020 if you would send me an email, michael.green@cg.catholic.edu.au as soon as possible indicating your intentions along with your destination. Much of this term is spent preparing for next year and our student numbers need to be accurate. Thank you for assisting us with this information gathering.

May God’s peace be in your families,
