Dear Parents, Teachers and Students,
Compass
Last week all families should have received an envelope with each parent’s login details for Compass. If you don’t yet have yours, check your child’s bag and if you still can’t find it, give the school office a call.
Remember, each parent or legal guardian has their own login credentials, so please ensure that you log in with your own username and password in order to send and receive communications to and from the school.
The Compass app is a free download for both IOS and Android, and Compass can also be accessed through any web browser.
If you have not yet installed the Compass app, please do so now: as of next week we will cease using SZapp for parent communication.
Rostrum Public Speaking
On Monday morning, Mia Buser presented a speech via Zoom for the Rostrum Public Speaking final and was selected as a grand-finalist. Mia now needs to write a new speech to present in Week 9.
Well done, Mia!
Archdiocesan Athletics
The Archdiocesan Athletics Carnival, which was postponed due to COVID restrictions, has been rescheduled for Tuesday 14 September, Week 10. Any further updates or information will be shared via the Carmeletta and Compass.
Feast of the Assumption
This Friday we celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of Mary, the mother of Jesus, with a prayer service hosted by 5/6EG. The actual Feast Day falls on Sunday 15 August.
COVID-19
Given the current state of the pandemic response in NSW, the worrying spread of COVID-19 into regional areas and subsequent lock-downs it is worth reminding all families of the necessity to adhere to our COVID-Safe practices at school. Students should not attend school if exhibiting any symptoms of respiratory illness, obtain a COVID test and remain at home until symptoms are resolved; all visitors to the school must check in using the NSW Service QR code; parents should avoid entering school grounds except for essential purposes, wear a mask and practise social-distancing.
We must also be prepared for the eventuality that a lockdown may be imposed on short notice, and a period of Remote Learning enacted, if any COVID-19 cases are detected in our Local Government Area. We are, of course, praying that this does not occur, but our experiences last year mean that teachers are fully prepared should this be necessary. Attached to this newsletter is a letter from Ross Fox, Director of Catholic Education, with an update on the management of COVID-19 in our Archdiocesan schools.
Religious Education in the Classroom
Year 3 students have been exploring different psalms that give thanks to God. Learning experiences focused on what the text is saying and what it means to the students. This is what 3JR students came up with:
Choose a psalm verse that you think is powerful:
Isabella: My verse is ‘O Lord, our Lord, your greatness is seen.’ I chose this because God is a really holy person.
Rushad: My verse is ‘Always thank God when God helps you.’ I chose this because some of these stories are the same as my Q’uran. For example, the story of Noah and we call it Nuh Alahiwasalam.
Write a prayer of thanks or praise:
Watch this space for work and quotes from 3ML and 3MA in next week’s newsletter.
Vinnies Winter Appeal - Thank you to all the families who have donated items for this special cause. Your generosity and support are most appreciated. Mrs Judith Williams from Vinnies Yass visited our school today to thank Mt Carmel students, staff and parents for their donations. Judith also explained the importance of these donations to the Yass community.
Prayer
An invitation to pray:
Dear God,
With grateful hearts we remember the power for goodness that Mary MacKillop is in our world. We are touched anew with her spirit of prophetic charity and generous participation in mission. We ask this in the name of Christ, the Sacred Heart, and of the Spirit of Mission.
Amen.
Feast of the Assumption of Mary
5/6EG will be leading a prayer service this Friday 13 August to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. The Assumption signals the end of Mary’s earthly life and marks her return to heaven to be reunited with Jesus. While the bodies of both Jesus and Mary are now in heaven, there is a difference between the Assumption and the Resurrection. Where Jesus arose from the tomb and ascended into heaven by his own power, Mary’s body was taken up to heaven by the power of her Son. For this reason we use different words to describe each event. One is the Ascension of Christ and the other, the Assumption of Mary (The Catholic Weekly, 2021).
May peace be with you,
Eva Karakotas

Canberra/Goulburn Athletics carnival
Please be advised that the CG Athletics Carnival that was to be held tomorrow, Thursday 12th August at the AIS has been postponed.
The event has been rescheduled for Thursday 14th October at the AIS.
Advice from the CE regarding inter-school sport can change rapidly given the current Covid 19 outbreak in N.S.W. We will plan for the following events in the hope that the situation will be resolved by the time they are held.
Boorowa Touch and Netball Carnival
The Boorowa Touch and Netball Carnival will be held on Friday 15th October, and we will be entering Year 2-6 teams in both the netball and touch competitions.
In preparation, we ask parents of all children in Years 2 to 6 to indicate their intention to attend the carnival or not, using the form at the following link:

Todd Woodbridge Cup
The Todd Woodbridge Cup is a primary school competition for stage 2 (years 3 and 4) students that uses modified equipment, numeric scoring and mixed gender teams.
The competition commences with school zone events followed by regional playoffs (term 3) and finally a state final that is held at Sydney Olympic Park each year (term 4).
The Todd Woodbridge Cup is not just about selecting the best students, but encouraging participation, providing a positive experience playing tennis, growing friendships and giving students the opportunity to represent their school in a team environment. For the majority of students, this may be their first experience representing their school.
The details of the Yass zone event are as follows:
Hume Tennis Club, Yass
8th September, 2021. 9.30am start - 1:30pm finish
School team/s of four boys and four girls. Cost is $5 per player.
Players are required to take recess, lunch, water bottle, hat and sunscreen.
If you wish to nominate your child/guardian for the event, please fill out the following Google form:

Mt Carmel School will be celebrating CBCA Book Week in Week 7 this term.
Save the Date
Book Parade - Friday 27 August 2021
The Children’s Book Council of Australia has shortlisted the 2021 books from a large selection of books. Each class from K-6 has been assigned a book to study. Students will then create a display based on the book for exhibition in the Lacey Library during Book Week.
A Zoom Parade where parents can watch from home or work will now take place in the library. A link to the zoom parade will be provided closer to the day. Children have been asked to bring the book with them when they parade.
Dress Up: The children are encouraged to dress up as a book character for the day. They can use the clothes they have at home and change them slightly. They do not have to buy a costume but if you wish to that’s your choice.
WHY NOT try this….
*Swap last year’s costume with a friend or a cousin
*Use what clothes you have at home and add a few props
*Visit St Vincent de Paul’s dress up rack
The school will be providing a sausage sizzle sandwich for all the students for lunch, after the book parade. Dietary requirements will be catered for.
Thanks
