Dear Parents, Teachers and Students,
COVID-19 Restrictions
This morning, the NSW Premier announced a further easing of restrictions for schools, as detailed below:
From Monday 28 February, schools can invite visitors – including parents, carers and families – to their sites regardless of their vaccination status, in line with settings in the broader community. Staff and volunteers must still meet mandatory double vaccination requirements.
From Monday 28 February, schools will no longer need to keep students in their class or year group cohorts. This means schools can reintroduce cross-year group activities and events such as assemblies.
From Monday 7 March, masks will no longer be mandatory for staff in primary school settings. Staff and students will be supported to wear a mask if they choose to do so.
I’m sure that students, parents and teachers alike are all looking forward to the pending changes and to school returning to ’normal’ as soon as possible.
Rapid Antigen Testing
Today we are sending home our next allocation of RATs. As per the most recent NSW Government advice, from next week we are no longer requesting twice-weekly surveillance testing, rather the tests are for use if your child has any symptoms that may be as a result of COVID-19 infection. You will still be required to report any positive test results to NSW Health via the Service NSW app and inform the school so that we can keep the community informed of possible exposure risks.
Please use the following guidelines over the coming weeks as we continue to monitor for COVID-19 in our school:
- If your child has even mild COVID-19 symptoms, get them tested with a RAT or PCR (nose and throat swab) test.
- They must isolate until they receive a negative test result, in line with health protocols.
- If symptoms continue, they should stay at home and take another RAT in 24 hours or have a PCR test. If the second RAT or initial PCR test result is negative, or another diagnosis is confirmed such as hay fever, they can return to school.
It is recommended that staff and students that return to school after recovering from COVID-19 do not participate in rapid antigen test surveillance for 28 days (4 weeks after recovery) following release from self-isolation. This is due to NSW Health advice that people who have recovered from COVID-19 have a low risk of contracting it again in the following 28 days. After 28 days (from week 5 after recovery), staff and students may resume participation in RAT surveillance.
Northern Region Swimming Carnival
Tomorrow Mt Carmel School is hosting the Northern Region Swimming Carnival, and I wish all our representatives the very best of luck for their events: well done to Brooke Reardon, Juliette Glover, Rosie Rainger, Georgina Collins, Fletcher Douglas, Archer Regan, Eddie Shannon, Harry Donoghue, George Douglas, Stella Pack, Milly Shannon, Ella Collins, Grace Ryan, Imogen Maher, Jed Newman, Oscar Walsh, Sid Luckie, Lulu Merriman, Esther Adie, Emmett Crocker, Tiana Pidding, Grace Ryan, Flynn Wullaert, Alexander Donaldson, Kobe Walsh, Jack Ryan, Darcy Newman, Jessica Hardy, Fletcher Lees and Mabel Adie. Thank you to Mr Ted Dunstan for the many hours of work required to coordinate such an event.
Shrove Tuesday
Next Tuesday is Shrove Tuesday, sometimes known as Pancake Day. Traditionally, pancakes were made as a way of using up rich foods such as dairy, sugar and eggs prior to commencing the Lenten Fast. One of Mt Carmel’s traditions has been to invite the community to a pancake breakfast on Shrove Tuesday. Unfortunately, with the uncertainty around restrictions, we were unable to plan for a breakfast celebration this year. We will, however, still mark the day by providing all students with a pancake to enjoy at recess — all dietary needs will be catered for. Another tradition of ours, the Pancake Race, will be held on the school oval after recess.
Ash Wednesday
The following day, Ash Wednesday, will mark the start of the season of Lent – a time of prayer, almsgiving and fasting in preparation for the celebration of Easter. We will begin our school day today with a prayer assembly, led by 1KG, and students will receive a sprinkling of ashes on their foreheads as a symbol of humility and penance.
There is an old Catholic tradition of not eating meat on Fridays during Lent, so from next week our canteen will be serving fish cocktails and fish burgers on Fridays for the rest of the term. Pies, sausage rolls and ham sandwiches will still be available on Thursdays.
Kinder Rest Days
The first few weeks of school have flown! A reminder that next Wednesday is the last of our Kinder Rest Days and Kindergarten students will commence full weeks from 9 March, Week 6.
May God’s peace be in your families,
Religious Education in the Classroom
Welcome to Week 4! Year 2 students have been exploring our school theme, “If we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another” 1 John 1:7 and exploring different prayers. I had the pleasure of visiting both Year 2 classes and below are some work samples.
Stage 3 students have started their Religious Education unit with a provocation walk to identify the outward signs (symbols and practices). These signs indicate how Mt Carmel School belongs to the wider Catholic community.
Let us be still and ask the Holy Spirit to be with us.
Dear Father,
Be with us as we pray.
Open our ears to hear your Word in the Gospel.
Unite us in faith, hope and love as we pray together.
Send your Holy Spirit to inspire and sustain us in our mission.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
I invite you to participate in a 3 minute prayer reflecting on today’s Scripture passage 1 Corinthians 12:7 .
