Dear Parents, Teachers and Students,
Interim Reports and Parent-Teacher Interviews
Teachers are currently preparing Interim Reports for all students, which will be sent home on the last day of term. Please bear in mind that the Interim Report is not an academic report but is designed to provide parents with a general insight into the work habits and social skills that students have been displaying as they have settled into the start of the new school year.
Parent-Teacher interviews will be held early next term and in a slightly different way to previous years. Our preference has and always will be to hold interviews face-to-face, but due to the fact that COVID case numbers are still quite high in the wider community we have decided that the safest option for now is to hold interviews remotely. Interviews will still be 15 minutes duration but will be held via Teams. Having interviews in this way also means that we have more flexibility in terms of timing, hopefully for parents as well. Given this, and the fact that holding interviews over several consecutive evenings requires a significant commitment from teachers in addition to their usual working hours, we are trialling a different approach this time around. Each teacher will be released from class for a day to conduct their interviews within the bounds of their normal working day, that is, between 8:30am and 4:30pm. A timetable and details of how to book an interview will be published next week.
Easter Hat Parade
Next Wednesday 6 April at 12:30pm, we will be holding the Mt Carmel Annual Easter Hat Parade under the shade cloth in the playground. All students are encouraged to create an Easter hat out of materials from around the home — reuse, recycle and be creative! Parents are welcome to attend this community event.
Fundraising Events for the Caritas Ukraine Appeal
Coinciding with the Easter Hat Parade, our Year 3 classes will be holding a “Cups for Caritas” stall, where parents can buy a hand-decorated egg cup and Easter egg — a perfect Easter gift! And on Thursday 7 April, the Mini-Vinnies group will be holding a cake stall at recess, with cupcakes and other treats available for purchase for 50c each.
Cross Country
Next Tuesday 5 April, we will be holding our 3-6 Cross-Country Carnival at Walker Park. Students will be leaving school after morning assembly to walk to the venue, races commencing with 8-year-olds at approximately 9:30am. We will return to school in time for recess. Students in Year 2 who are turning 8 this year may compete at the 3-6 carnival if they are competitive runners; however, there will be a separate K-2 Cross Country event held on the school oval at 12:30pm. Parent spectators are welcome to attend both events. The Northern Region Cross Country is scheduled to be held on Friday 29 April, Week 1, next term.
Anzac Day Parade
This year ANZAC Day falls on the first Monday after the school holidays, and after consecutive years of cancelled and restricted events it is wonderful that the town parade will be held this year. Mt Carmel will be marching in the parade and I encourage as many students as possible to attend.
The ANZAC March commences at 10:45am, so Mt Carmel students (in winter uniform) need to assemble outside the Liberty Theatre in Lead Street at 10.30am. The ANZAC ceremony will conclude outside the Yass Memorial Hall at approximately 11:45am. It would be fantastic to have every student participating!
School Photos — Save the Date
School photo day will be Monday 9 May, Week 3. This year photo package bookings, including family photos, will be via Compass rather than the photo envelopes families may be familiar with. Details of how to book will be published early next term.
NAPLAN
Years 3 and 5 students will be completing NAPLAN Online in Week 3 next term. In preparation for NAPLAN Online, our school has been participating in practice tests over the last week. The practice tests give students an opportunity to become familiar with the test format, functions and tools of the online tests in a test environment but are not an assessment of student ability and will not be marked. Excessive preparation for NAPLAN Online is not recommended and can increase a student’s anxiety. At Mt Carmel, we treat NAPLAN as nothing special, just a normal thing that students do at school. If you have any concerns about your child’s participation in NAPLAN, please have a conversation with their classroom teacher.
Holy Week and Easter
With Easter falling in the middle of the school holidays, Holy Week commences with Palm Sunday after we have broken up for the term. As part of our preparations for this special time in our liturgical calendar, classes are preparing displays for the Stations of the Cross, which we will walk in class groups on the last day of term to remember Jesus’ journey to Calvary. Fr Peter will lead us in a whole-school prayer at the end of our pilgrimage. We will share a digital presentation of our Stations of the Cross for families to walk with us virtually.
Term 2 Dates
Term 2 commences for students on Wednesday 27 April, following the Anzac Day public holiday on Monday and a pupil-free staff professional development day on Tuesday. The start of Term 2 means a change to the winter school uniform.
May God’s peace be in your families,
Religious Education in the Classroom
Welcome to Week 9! 1KG visited Mercy Chapel to pray and look at the different stained glass windows and statues. The stained glass window of Jesus dies on the Cross provoked lots of interest and discussion.
Sacrament of Reconciliation
Congratulations to the 20 students who received their first Sacrament of Reconciliation on Wednesday 23 March 2022 at St Augustine’s Church. Thank you to Fr Peter, Fr Joshy, and the Sacramental Team.
Mt Carmel’s Mini Vinnies News
Mt Carmel’s Mini Vinnies had their first catch up last week and have decided to organise a Cake Stall fundraiser for Caritas' Project Compassion - Ukraine Appeal in Week 10, Thursday 7 April 2022. Our Mini Vinnies group will be baking yummy treats to sell at recess. Treats cost 50c each.
Youth Ministry
Our youth minister, Clare Healy, works at Mt Carmel every Thursday to support the development, implementation and growth of youth ministry in the school.
Clare is a 20 year old from Murrumbateman. She is currently working as a receptionist for Care financial counselling service. She loves the beach, coffee, and animals. Clare went to Mt Carmel from Kindergarten to Year 6 and is very excited to be back.
Prayer
Lord, we would grow with you
New shoots reaching out
Hands stretched upward
Like leaves newly formed
Soaking up your light and warmth
Lord, we would grow with you.
Lord, we would grow with you
In sunshine and rain
In darkness and light
In cold days and summer days
From Springtime to Winter
Lord, we would grow with you.
Lord, we would grow with you
And bring forth fruit
That is pleasing to you
Fed by your living water
Giving sustainance to others
Lord, we would grow with you.
Amen.

Cross Country
The Mt Carmel Cross Country carnival will be held on Tuesday 5th April at Walker Park. Years 3-6 will head to Walker Park shortly after morning assembly. 8, 9 and 10 year olds will complete two laps of the 1km track. 11 and 12 year olds will complete three laps of the 1km track. 8 year old students in Year 2 who wish to participate at Walker Park need to notify their teacher so arrangements can be made for them to walk with a Year 3 class. Students will be back at school by recess so will only need to take a drink bottle with them to the track. K-2 students will run their own modified cross country at school from 12:30pm - 1:30pm, cheered on by the rest of the school and parents.
