Dear Parents, Teachers and Students,
2023 Enrolments
Our enrolment drive for 2023 has already begun. The official enrolment period for Catholic Schools in this Archdiocese runs from Monday 2 May until Friday 27 May. If you have a pre-school child ready for Kindergarten, it’s time to enrol now. Catholic Education Canberra Goulburn has an online enrolment form, which can be accessed by clicking the link below. If you need to access a hard-copy form, please contact the Front Office. An interview will be organised once the enrolment application is received. If your friends have a child starting in Kindergarten next year, please encourage them to consider Mt Carmel as an option for their children’s education. We will be holding Open Day tours on Tuesday 17 and Wednesday 18 May, with a Parent Information Evening in the Lacey Library at 6pm on Wednesday 18 May.

Online Family Event
Next Monday, 16 May, the Catholic School Parents Council will be running a webinar about the ways it provides advocacy, leadership, representation and support for families in our Archdiocese. The event will be an opportunity to discover some practical ways to get engaged in your child’s Catholic education. A flier about this event can be found later in this newsletter.
COVID-19 and Other Illnesses at School
Firstly, a reminder that, even with the eased COVID-19 restrictions in NSW, the school still has reporting obligations about COVID cases in the school. If your child does return a positive COVID test, please inform the school office so that we can both meet our compliance obligations and monitor the local COVID situation and respond accordingly, in the event of a surge in numbers in the school. Of course there are other illnesses that circulate in schools, and the winter terms always see a spike in colds and flu. If your child is unwell, please keep them at home until they are symptom free. Last week we sent families another allocation of Rapid Antigen Tests. If you require additional test kits, please contact the school office and we may be able to assist.
Playgroup
Tomorrow the Mt Carmel Playgroup will be recommencing. Playgroup will run from 9am to 11am each Thursday in the Playgroup Room off the Dutton Street entrance to the Performing Arts Centre. The cost is $3 for the first child, then $1 for any additional children and includes morning tea. We are very excited to have playgroup back after a long hiatus. All are welcome; spread the word!
NAPLAN
Years 3 and 5 students have now completed NAPLAN. Congratulations to everyone for a job well done. It was the first time for each of the cohorts to participate in the test, as two years ago it was cancelled because of the emerging COVID-19 pandemic. There will be an opportunity for students who have been away to sit catch-up tests; please email jan.harvey@cg.catholic.edu.au if your child has been absent this week and you would still like them to complete NAPLAN.
Cross Country
Congratulations to Macy Camilleri, Emmett Crocker, Patrick Dawes, Hugo Dunstan, Bryson Flynn, Reese Flynn, Josh Miller, Chloe Pearce and Archer Regan, who all represented the Northern Region at the Archdiocesan carnival at Stromlo on Monday. It was a very competitive event, with runners from across the Archdiocese competing, but the weather and the track were both magnificent. Special congratulations to Bryson Flynn, who came first in his event, and to Emmet Crocker, who placed third, and will now progress to the NSW CCC Cross Country at Eastern Creek on 7 June.
Athletics Carnival
Our 3-6 Athletics Carnival will be held, weather permitting, on Friday 3 June (Week 6) at Victoria Park. Primary students who are running in the 800m event will need to be at Victoria Park by 9am; all others will start the day at school and walk to and from the carnival with their class. Spectators and parent-helpers will be welcome to attend, and a note will be sent home shortly seeking volunteers.
Other Sporting Achievements
Congratulations to Lulu Merriman and Kobe Walsh, who have been selected to play in the Mackillop Hockey and Rugby League teams, respectively. Well done to both students on their fantastic achievement.
Pupil-Free Days
A reminder that this term there will be two additional pupil-free days this term — Monday 23 May, Week 5, and Friday 10 June, Week 7.
Walk Safely to School Day
Next Friday, 20 May, is Walk Safely to School Day and Mt Carmel is encouraging as many families as possible to participate. If there is anyone who lives too far from school to walk the whole way but would still like to participate, we will be hosting a “Walking School Bus”. We will meet at the Liberty Theatre corner from 8am, and at 8:15am we will walk down the main street, crossing Meehan St at the lights, up Rossi Street and then enter school via the Dutton St entrance. Parents and families are welcome to join in; no bikes or scooters, please.
Readers for Parish Mass
A reminder that St Augustine’s parish is recruiting volunteers who may be interested in the Reading Ministry at Mass. Any Year 6 students who may be interested in this service, and of course any parents from across the school community, can come to a training session for the Ministry of Readers this week on either Thursday 12 May or Friday 13 May at 7pm in St Augustine’s Church.
May God’s peace be in your families,
Welcome to Week 3! Year 1’s Religious Education unit of work focuses on choices and how choices can affect others. Students are exploring a selection of fables that have a moral message and examining scripture from the Old Testament on making responsible choices.
1AH’s work samples on the moral message of different fables.
1KG students used the Visible Thinking Routine: See, Think, Wonder to explore Genesis 2: 4b-8,15-23, through different images.
Mother’s Day Prayer Service
Thank you to Mrs Swadling and 2LS for leading a beautiful prayer service.
Journey with Jesus Retreat Day
Year 5 and 6 students participated in the Journey with Jesus Retreat Day, led by a Youth Ministry team. The retreat was an opportunity for students to learn more about the Gospel message of love, salvation, reconciliation and forgiveness.
Mt Carmel’s Mini Vinnies News
The next workshop for Yr 3-6 students is on Thursday 12 May with Matt Wilson from Mini Vinnies. This workshop will be used as a provocation for our next fundraiser event.
Prayer
Lord, You are always calling us into a deeper relationship through daily prayer. Help us to keep our eyes on You and listen to Your Word, which brings healing, protection and eternal life.
Amen

Congratulations to Lulu Merriman who made it through to the Mackillop Hockey team and will compete in the NSWPSSA Championships in Tamworth on 31st May.
Rugby League
Congratulations to Koby Walsh who made it through to the Mackillop U12s Rugby League team and will compete at the NSWPSSA Championships in Kiama on 21st June.
Athletics Carnival
In preparation for this year’s athletics carnival, I am hoping to complete some of the field events prior to the day to free up some time and make the carnival less stressful and more fun! So, to facilitate this I will be running shot put events on our school oval on Monday. Can those students who wish to compete in shot put please bring their Sports uniform in their bags on Monday to change into if you wish (not compulsory). Students will be called out to the oval in age groups throughout the day to compete. Students will be selected for Northern Region in three age groups; Junior, Intermediate (11 yrs) and Seniors. Students in Year 2 and 3 are encouraged to compete but need to remember they will be competing against Year 4 students.

National Simultaneous Storytime - Wednesday 25 May
National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. Now in its 22nd successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children's book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Foundation to Year 6.
By facilitating NSS we aim to:
- promote the value of reading and literacy,
- promote the value and fun of books,
- promote an Australian writer and publisher,
- promote storytime activities in libraries and communities around the country,
- and provide opportunities to involve parents, grandparents, the media and others to participate in and enjoy the occasion.
NSS receives positive media coverage, generates a great deal of community interest and is held annually as part of Library and Information Week. 2021 was our biggest and most successful NSS to date with over 1.98 million participants at over 33 thousand locations!
We are looking forward to this event at Mt Carmel!
