Dear Parents, Teachers and Students,
Industrial Action
A reminder to all families that Mt Carmel School will be affected by tomorrow’s planned Protected Industrial Action. The school will be open on Thursday, but with minimal supervision, so it is still requested that you make alternative arrangements for your children if possible; we will not have sufficient staff at school for the operation of normal classes.
Confirmation
The Catholic Parish of St Augustine Yass invites children baptised in our tradition, who have made their First Holy Communion and are in Year 6 or beyond to continue their journey in faith by preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation which will be celebrated on the 11th September 2022. Registrations and information sessions will be held in-person at St Augustine's Parish on the 20th of July 2022 from 5-6pm and 21st of July 2022 from 5-6pm. Registration forms can be found on St Augustines website from early July.
School Holiday eSafety
As a treat during the school holidays, many families are a bit more relaxed with their children’s screen-time rules (no judgement — it happens in my household, too), so it’s perhaps a good time to share some eSafety information. It can sometimes sound like a whole different language when we hear our children talk about the various games they and their friends are playing; the Office of the eSafety Commissioner has a very helpful guide to the popular and common games, apps and social media that your child may be accessing. Go to https://www.esafety.gov.au/key-issues/esafety-guide to find out about these apps and sites, including how to protect your personal information and how to report harmful content.
Also, for your information, the school has received reports of videos circulating on platforms such as YouTube, Minecraft and TikTok containing a frightening blue teddy called Huggy Wuggy — it’s been reported in some news outlets, too.
Just like all TV characters and video game villains, videos of a violent and scary nature can be distressing to young people. If your child has seen videos like this, or they talk about them and they seem worries or scared, it is essential that you talk about the fact that Huggy Wuggy is not real, it cannot directly harm them and that they are safe.
If a child doesn’t bring it up, however, we do not recommend talking to them about it as this often encourages them to go searching for it and discuss it with their friends.
We know that issues such as this can be worrisome for parents; however, the remedy isn’t to ban children from their devices but rather encourage ongoing conversations and online safety education. Kids need to know that they can tell a trusted adult if something concerns them or makes them feel uncomfortable without the fear of having their devices taken off them.
It is recommend that devices are not allowed in the bedroom when kids are young and as they get older a curfew is implemented. If you have a good understanding of what they are doing on their devices and when, it will give you the opportunity to discuss certain content that children may have viewed if necessary.
There are parental controls on all devices; make sure you use them. They are usually in the settings area of the device and are relatively easy to step-through. You can use Google and YouTube to access instructions on how to set parental controls for particular devices.
Public Speaking
Congratulations to Alexander Donaldson who, on Monday evening at the Soldiers Club, presented his speech about Drones at the Rostrum Primary Schools Public Speaking Quarter-Finals. Alex placed second on Monday night and will now progress through to the Semi-Finals in Canberra next term. Well done, Alex!
CEO Sleepout
Last Thursday night I slept outside at the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra in support of the Vinnies CEO Sleepout, and thanks to the generosity of our community I raised over $4000, which will directly assist families experiencing financial hardship this winter in our own region. I am incredibly grateful for everyone’s generosity and support of this very worthy cause. I’m also, as an aside, very grateful that the event was held last week as the overnight temperature in Canberra was a balmy 7 degrees, which is so much more tolerable than the minus 5 and 6 degree frosts we’ve been enduring this week. Even the special patchwork quilt that KJG made for me would have struggled to provide much extra warmth on a night like that! Thanks again to everyone whose generous donations helped me to more than double my fundraising goal.
Semester One Reports
This Friday your child’s Semester One Report will be published to Compass, and you can view it by first going to your child’s profile, either on the app or in your web browser, then selecting the Reports tab. Printed reports will not be sent home, so please contact the office if you are unsure how to access them or if you are having any problems with Compass. Make sure that you also either download and save a PDF of the report to your own computer or print a copy to keep for your own records. As long as your child is enrolled at Mt Carmel you can view and download their current and previous reports, but once they leave the school you will not be able to access Compass.
This is a wonderful opportunity to take time with your child to sit and talk about the learning they have undertaken so far this year. Celebrate their successes and help them work out strategies for the areas that may need further development. Teachers commit significant hours outside of school time to prepare our children’s reports; I am very grateful for the dedicated teaching staff we have here at Mt Carmel.
We will not be holding formal Parent-Teacher Interviews at this time as these were held at the beginning of the term, but parents are always welcome to make an individual appointment with their child’s teacher any time they would like to discus their child’s progress.
Happy Holidays
Please note that students return to school on Tuesday 19 July in their sports uniform. Thank you to everyone for their wonderful work this term. Staff, students and parents have worked incredibly hard and these efforts are very much appreciated. I trust that everyone will have a restful and enjoyable mid-year break. Travel safely, if you are going away, and stay warm. I look forward to seeing everyone in Term 3.
Welcome to the last week of Term 2! It has been a wonderful term full of exciting learning experiences. I have enjoyed interacting with students during their Religion lessons and joining classes during Friday Parish Mass.
Yr 5/6 students have been examining the role of early Catholic Pioneers in building the foundations of the church. Students have been researching Caroline Chisholm and how she represented the Catholic faith and values in her life.
Mt Carmel’s Mini Vinnies News
Thank you to all the families who have donated towards the Vinnies Winter Appeal. We have had so many donations! Mrs Judith Williams will be visiting Mt Carmel School on Friday 1 July to thank our community for the donations.
Lord God,
We ask You to help us to be open to the Holy Spirit who leads us to the truth.
Let us feel your protection, love and grace in times of hardship and let us be your hands and feet in times of strength.
Grace us to become ever greater witnesses to Your Truth in our work and in our communities.
May we be open to sharing the truth of your teaching as we fulfil the ministries of leadership and service you have called us to live.
And continue to reach out to others in need and love one another.
