Dear Parents, Teachers and Students,
Welcome Back for Term 3
I would like to extend a very warm welcome back for Term 3 to all students, families and staff. I trust that the two-week break provided an opportunity to refresh and unwind, and that all are now ready to take on the challenges of a new term. It’s been lovely catching up with students on the playground and hearing about their holiday break.
COVID-19 Update
Following the school holidays, when many in our community have travelled and both COVID and influenza cases are predicted to steeply rise, it is very important that health guidelines be carefully followed and that students and staff members who are unwell do not attend school. A letter from the Director of Catholic Education outlining the current COVID situation and its possible impact on schools over the coming months was sent to families via Compass yesterday; it is attached to this newsletter for your information.
There are a number of recommendations, designed to limit schools’ exposure risks and keep teachers in front of classes, that must be implemented this term. I will provide further correspondence by the end of the week detailing the impact this will have on our school.
Upcoming Incursions
There are some planned incursions in the coming week that, thankfully, will not be impacted by this term’s COVID restrictions. The Life Education van will be onsite next week, with activities tailored for each year level, and the University of Sydney’s Engineers Without Borders will be visiting on Thursday to investigate renewable energy with our Year 5/6 classes.
Mt Carmel Day
Tomorrow we will be celebrating Mt Carmel Day (the actual Feast Day falls on July 16, which was the last Saturday of the school holidays) with a whole-school Mass and a day of fun activities and there will be a special treat for everyone at recess time. Unfortunately, we are unable to invite parents to attend Mass with us.
Canteen
The Canteen will only be operating for lunch orders tomorrow, and no ice-blocks or hot chocolates will be available. It will be back to full-service on Friday.
Sacrament of Confirmation
The Catholic Parish of St Augustine Yass invites children baptised in our tradition, who have made their First Holy Communion and are in Year 6 or beyond to continue their journey in faith by preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation which will be celebrated on the 11th September 2022.
Registrations and information sessions will be held in-person at St Augustine's Parish on Wednesday 20th of July from 5-6pm and Thursday 21st of July from 5-6pm. Registration forms will be available on the evening to complete.
CWA Poster Competition
The annual CWA Poster Competition is on again, and this year’s focus country is Latvia. Students in Kindergarten and Year 1 can submit a colouring-in sheet, which can be collected from the office or downloaded from this newsletter; students from Year 2 and above can submit a poster on a large sheet of cardboard, containing pictures and written information about Latvia, or they can submit a postcard to family or friends (template also available from the office or downloadable) describing an interesting event, sights or travels in Latvia, or that can submit a travel journal (suggested format is a standard exercise book) telling of a week’s holiday, real or imagined, in Latvia.
Ideas for entries include national dress, food, buildings, cultural events, etc.
All entries must be received at the school office by 9am Friday 12 August (Week 4) and need to have the student’s school, class, name and age displayed on the back.
Yass Valley SPIN Pyjama Day
Next Friday, 29 July, come to school in your PJs in return for a gold coin donation to support those in our Community in need of medical assistance.
May God’s peace be in your families,
Welcome to Term 3! It is fantastic to see everyone after the holidays and I hope you have had a restful break with family and friends.
Our pupil free day started with a lovely Mass in our school chapel, the Mercy Chapel, followed by Fr Peter talking to teachers about the seven Sacraments.
Feast Day of Our Lady of Mt Carmel Mass
Mt Carmel School will be celebrating the Feast Day of Our Lady of Mt Carmel with a special Mass on Thursday 21 July 2022, 9:45 am, at St Augustine’s Church. Unfortunately, parents and the wider community are not able to attend Mass. After recess, students will participate in Mt Carmel Day activities.
Mt Carmel’s Mini Vinnies News
Thank you to all the students, staff, and families who supported Mt Carmel’s Vinnies Winter Appeal. All donations were greatly appreciated by St Augustine’s Conference Yass.
Prayer
Prayer to the Blessed Mother of Mount Carmel
"O most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendour of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. O Star of the Sea, help me and show me you are my Mother. O Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succour me in this necessity (make request). There are none that can withstand your power. O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. Sweet Mother I place this cause in your hands. Amen.

CWA Education Grants - Year 7 Students 2023
If any current year 6 student would like to apply for a 2023 Educational Grant, please collect the application form from the front office.
The Southern Tablelands Group of the CWA of NSW are awarding 15 grants of $250 each. Applications close on Tuesday 11 October.
Yass Swimming Club - Wood Auction, BBQ & Cake Stall
The funds raised from this event are to top up two grants that the club have received to pay for their own set of automatic Dolphin Timers.
These timers will not only benefit the Yass Swimming Club, but the club plans to allow the local schools to use them for their school swimming carnivals making it much easier for administration during carnivals, as the timers link to the start so they automatically start for each race and results/times are automatically sent to the computer for results reducing labour on sports teachers.
Fifteen loads of wood will be auctioned on Saturday morning at 10am, and we would like as many people as possible to be there on the day to bid. The wood will be delivered and unloaded to winning bidders.
Next Friday, 29 July, come to school in your PJs in return for a gold coin donation to support those in our Community in need of medical assistance.
