Book Week
Next week is Book Week, and it's that time again when we get dressed up for the day to celebrate our favourite characters, stories and the love of reading. This year’s theme for Book Week is Dreaming with Eyes Open, and I am very much looking forward to the super-spectacle of the costume parade at 12:30pm next Friday 26 August. After the parade, students will be provided with a sausage-sizzle lunch and all dietary needs will be catered for. The canteen will be open as usual for orders at recess and lunch.
If the weather is good, we will hold the parade outside under the shade cloth and we can invite parents to come and watch the parade. If the weather is inclement then we will hold the parade in the Library and stream it to parents on Teams; unfortunately, we cannot invite parents to attend if we have to hold the parade indoors.
Mt Carmel School Team For Vigil Mass
This Saturday 20 August at 6:00pm, Mt Carmel School is coordinating the Vigil Mass. Thanks to those students who have already offered their time to help with a special job on Saturday night. It’s not too late to volunteer if you would like a role at the Mass – students can see Mrs Karakotas – and of course it would be lovely to see lots of families attending Mass, too.
Archdiocesan Athletics
Best of luck to Mabel Adie, Wyatt Brassil Camilla Bremner, Georgina Burke, Lily Butt, Macy Camilleri, Emmett Crocker, Bryson Flynn, Reese Flynn, Juliette Glover, Darcy Gooley, Henry Gooley, Alicia Hardy, Riley Hewitt, Georgia Inkster, Summer Litster, Sid Luckie, Tayla Milward, Chloe Pearce, Archer Regan, Jack Ryan, Jackson Shelton, Henry Shoring, Kobe Walsh and Byam Welsh, who will be travelling to the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra next Tuesday to represent the Northern Region in the Archdiocesan Athletics Carnival.
Departing Students
Schools are required to record destination schools for all departing students. I ask that all families of Year 6 students inform us as soon as possible of the high school your child will be attending. In the Forms & Documents tile on the school website and app is a Year 7 2023 Destination eForm, or you can use the link below to access the form directly. I also request that any K-5 families moving from Mt Carmel at the end of this year send me an email (michael.green@cg.catholic.edu.au) as soon as possible indicating your intentions along with your destination. Much of this term is spent preparing for next year and our student numbers need to be accurate. Thank you for assisting us with this information gathering.

Yass Valley Council Youth Survey
The Yass Valley Council is seeking feedback from young people (aged 11-24) about the kinds of activities, events or initiatives they would like to see happening in the Yass Valley. There is a very short (5-minute) survey that will allow young people to have a say on how the Office for Regional Youth and the Yass Valley Council spends their funding to best meet the needs of youth in our region. If someone in your family would like to have a say, please use the following link to share your thoughts: https://forms.gle/KUQVzyzWngM7CdNaA
Irish and Celtic Music Festival Children’s Workshops
On 17-18 September, as part of the Yass Irish and Celtic Music Festival, Mt Carmel will be hosting the Junior Fleadh.
Fleadh (pronounced flah) is a Celtic word that means festival, and it is a chance for students who are interested in Irish music to come and join in free instrumental and dance workshops, culminating in a concert in the Lovat Chapel; all experience levels are welcome. More information and an RSVP link can be found further in this newsletter.
School Board and Community Council Review
The Catholic Education Commission endorsed the establishment of a Working Group to review various aspects of Archdiocesan School Board and Community Council models. During the course of this year the Working Group has engaged in targeted consultation with internal stakeholders and has had some preliminary discussions with a narrow group of external stakeholders, including representatives from the Catholic School Parents Archdiocese of Canberra & Goulburn.
The Working Group is now seeking to draw on the experiences, expertise and perspectives of parents and carers, school staff and members of school communities through a process of general consultation. To this end, an Issues Paper has been drafted outlining the key issues that the Working Group has identified to date and posing a number of discussion questions that the Working Group is seeking responses to.
You can go to the webpage: https://cg.catholic.edu.au/school-board-and-community-council-review/foreword/ to submit a response to the questions posed in the Issues Paper. Look for the Share Your Views link under the Resources heading then select Discussion Questions for Parents.
The closing date for submissions is 2 September 2022.
May God’s peace be in your families,
Welcome to Week 5! Year 5/6's Religious Education unit of work explores: How can we use prayer to build our relationship with God? Students have examined Lectio and Visio Divina prayer and meditative prayer.
Last Thursday, students visited St Clement’s in Galong, and had the opportunity to experience a labyrinth meditation walk, reflect, pray, visit the library and explore the monastery’s grounds.
What did students think of St Clement’s?
Sid: ‘I loved the history of the building and the people who first lived there.’
Emily: ‘I liked the old library because it had old books. The grotto was cool because the rocks were hand placed.’
Connor: ‘The grounds had many different things to look at and I enjoyed the tour by Fr Dom.’
James: ‘I did not expect the labyrinth to be so long!’
Charlie: ‘I liked the library the most because it had an old computer.’
Jacob: ‘I liked the library because of the old books. The handmade grotto was cool too.’
Emily: ‘I liked the labyrinth because I prayed in silence. I also liked the chapel because it was beautiful and a great place to pray.’
Jesse: ‘I liked that we spent time learning about the history of the place. The grotto was cool because it had a good view when you prayed.’
Tilly: The labyrinth and the chapel were my favourite places. I learnt many new things about St Clement’s.’
On Monday 5/6KG led a lovely prayer service to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of Mary.
Mt Carmel’s Mini Vinnies News
Our Mini Vinnies team did a great job running the box challenge to raise awareness of homelessness. There was lots of collaboration and problem solving to make shelters using cardboard boxes. Students enjoyed the experience and had lots of fun!
Prayer and Reflection
Let us be still and ask the Holy Spirit to be with us.
Dear Father,
Be with us as we pray.
Open our ears to hear your Word in the Gospel.
Unite us in faith, hope and love as we pray together.
Send your Holy Spirit to inspire and sustain us in our mission.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
I invite you to participate in a 3 minute prayer reflecting a Scripture passage https://www.loyolapress.com/3-minute-retreats-daily-online-prayer/

All children are asked to come dressed up as a book character on the Friday. Please use any dress ups you have at home or swap with a friend/cousin. It is not meant to be a costly event. I encourage that students have a copy of their book to carry with them when they parade. They can borrow from our library or bring the book from your home library.
The school will be providing a sausage sizzle lunch to all students after the parade to celebrate this special day. Dietary requirements will be catered for.
