Dear Parents, Teachers and Students,
Book Week
Book Week is here, and the Lacey Library has been transformed by the incredible work of each class, produced as they have explored some of the books shortlisted for this year’s CBCA Book of the Year Awards. I’m very pleased to confirm that Friday’s weather forecast is fine, so the Book Week costume parade will be going ahead on the school playground and we can invite parents to attend. Classes will gather around the shade-cloth at 12:30pm for the parade. There will be marked zones for parents / spectators to stand behind the student seating areas. Please BYO folding chair if you would like to sit; there will be limited spectator seating with priority given to those with mobility needs. Although they are not a requirement to attend the parade outdoors, spectators are encouraged to wear a mask. After the parade, parents may like to peruse our Book Week displays; however, a mask must be worn to visit the Library.
After the parade, students will be provided with a sausage-sizzle lunch and all dietary needs will be catered for. The canteen will be open as usual for orders at recess and lunch.
My congratulations and sincere thanks to Mrs Turner and Mrs Patmore, who every year go above and beyond to make Book Week such a wonderful and exciting experience for all our students.
Archdiocesan Athletics
Despite a day of truly miserable weather, the Mt Carmel students representing the Northern Region at yesterday’s Archdiocesan Athletics Carnival did a great job – congratulations to you all and special thanks to Mrs Glover for braving a day in the elements to coordinate and support our athletes. Several of our students have been selected to represent the Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn at the Mackillop Athletics Carnival at the Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre in September: congratulations to Bryson Flynn, Juliette Glover, Darcy Gooley, Henry Gooley, Henry Shoring, Byam Welsh and Kobe Walsh — what a magnificent achievement!
Term Dates
Please note that the last day of Term 3 for students will be Wednesday 21 September. Term 4 will commence on Tuesday 11 October and will conclude on Friday 16 December.
Catholic Education Commission
The Catholic Education Commission (CEC) is seeking expressions of interest from community members who may wish be a part of this body. The role of the CEC is to support and advise the Archbishop in regard to his responsibilities for Catholic schools in the Archdiocese. Attached to this week’s Carmeletta is a letter from Patrick McArdle, Chair of the Commission, containing further information.
Parent Survey on Student Wellbeing and Learning
Catholic School Parents Australia (CSPA) is inviting parents and carers to have their say as to what matters to them regarding the wellbeing and learning of their child(ren). The CSPA 2022 Parent Survey closes on 31 August. The survey feedback will assist CSPA in reporting to the Federal Government and Catholic education; all feedback will remain anonymous.

May God’s peace be in your families,
Welcome to Week 6! Year 3’s Religious Education unit of work focuses on the Jewish people having a special relationship with God. During my visit to 3JR, students completed a detailed read of three different scripture passages about God’s covenant with Abraham and Noah, and God’s promise to Jacob. Students selected their favourite passage to illustrate through painting.
5/6AB students prepared either a Visio Divina or a Lectio Divina to share with their Year 1 buddies. They did a great job!
Mt Carmel’s Mini Vinnies News
Our Mini Vinnies team did a great job running the box challenge to raise awareness of homelessness. There was lots of collaboration and problem solving to make shelters using cardboard boxes. Students enjoyed the experience and had lots of fun!
Luke 13:22 - The Narrow Door
In Luke’s Gospel, when asked what the Kingdom of Heaven is like, Jesus portrays salvation as participation in a wedding feast where those invited have declined the invitation, thinking other commitments are more important. It becomes a feast where those least likely to be invited - complete strangers, foreigners, sinners and the poor have pride of place. If heaven is an eternal celebration, a lavish festive table to which I am invited, I need to know that those with pride of place will be most marginalised in our society, the poorest, the sickest, the least able. The question we need to ask is do we want to feast, to share a table, for eternity with them. There’s people knocking at our door. Let’s answer and generously welcome them to a place at our table. Story time in the library for infants children with Mr Green and Mrs Harvey reading to the Year 3 and 4 children yesterday.
Kindergarten with their buddies in the library answering questions about the Book Week displays.
The Book Week parade will be held this Friday 26 August.
Time: 12:30pm
Location: Asphalt
As sunshine is forcast this Friday, we invite all parents, caregivers, family and friends to come and watch the children parade in their costumes.
After the parade has finished, parents are able to visit the library to view the class displays. Please note that parents will need to wear a mask to enter the library.
If by chance it does rain on Friday, the parade will move to the library, it will be recorded and a link will be sent via Teams for parents to watch.
All children are asked to come dressed up as a book character on this Friday. Please use any dress ups you have at home or swap with a friend/cousin. It is not meant to be a costly event. I encourage that students have a copy of their book to carry with them when they parade. They can borrow from our library or bring the book from your home library.
The school will be providing a sausage sizzle lunch to all students after the parade to celebrate this special day. Dietary requirements will be catered for.

Over the past few weeks, I seem to have developed a penchant for Harry Potter jokes. Sadly, or perhaps thankfully, this will be final one for 2022.

Do you like to read Manga? …would you like to draw Manga?
Next Tuesday, Kenny Chan, a well known Manga Artist will be visiting Mt Carmel School. Each year group will have an interactive workshop learning various Manga techniques.
This is an exciting incursion for our students that will be provided by the school.
Kenny will show the kids how to draw either manga-style faces that will convey emotion through character expressions, or mechas in the Super Robot style. He will teach the nuances of each line in perfecting the drawing of manga as well as the use of manga in Japan.
Kenny has been running classes in the Japanese manga comic form around Victoria for 15 years. He has previously worked as a freelance artist and animator in comics, video games and movies.
