Dear Parents, Teachers and Students,
Colour Run Fun Day
We still do not have a date for the rescheduled Colour Fun Day as it will be some time yet before the grounds have fully dried. Today is the last day to claim your child’s fundraising prizes! Please ensure that you have claimed your prizes online before tomorrow — the deadline cannot be extended.
Mt Carmel-Led Parish Mass
This Saturday, 5 November, Mt Carmel will be leading the Vigil Mass at 6pm and we are still looking for student volunteers to help out with a range of jobs such as scripture reading, prayers of the faithful, the offertory procession, collections and choir. Mrs Karakotas is collecting names, so please contact her if your child would like to help and has not yet returned a note. All are welcome, and even if you turn up on the night and haven’t returned a note we can find a role for you.
Student Leadership
Next Friday, nominations open for Year 5 students who are seeking formal leadership positions in 2023; that is, School Captains, Vice-Captains, House Captains and SRC Representatives. At Mt Carmel, our student leaders are appointed, not elected, and the process begins with students completing a nomination form addressing a selection criteria. These forms must be submitted by Friday 18 November, Week 6. Nominees then present a speech to the school in Week 7 and meet with an interview panel in Week 8. The panel will then decide on appointments, taking into consideration each nominee’s interview, application and feedback from students and teachers (via voting slips, following the speeches). I wish all who are considering nominating for these positions the very best.
On Friday we will be holding our final Socktober event: a Sockball House Spirit Challenge. If you have made a sockball at home from recycled materials, bring it to school on Friday; if you haven’t yet made one, it’s not too late. Go to https://www.socktober.org.au/socktober-shootout for a video on how to make your own sockball.
Class Placements 2023
Parents are invited to email me with regard to any considerations you may have for your child’s class placement for 2023. These considerations should be important for the education and wellbeing of your child. Requests for a particular teacher, gender of a teacher, multiple friends etc, are usually not appropriate nor a priority. It is very important for parents to understand that creating classes is detailed and exacting work completed by the teachers to ensure that your child is placed in an appropriate class group each year. When considering class groupings, teachers will look specifically at your child’s educational and social needs and place them with a teacher and peers that will support their development. Requests are to be emailed to me at: michael.green@cg.catholic.edu.au by Friday 4 November 2022. Requests received after this date may not be able to be considered. Please be aware that each request will be considered separately and by no means are all requests met. Requests from previous years are not kept on file or considered, as situations change each year. If you would like a previous request to be considered again, you are asked to send in a new request for 2023.
May God’s peace be in your families,
Welcome to week 4! Year 5/6’s Religious Education unit of work explores: Mary can be a model of discipleship for today's world. In this unit, students use the Three Worlds of the Text to analyse Scripture, images and songs about Mary. During my visit to 5/6KG, the students’ task was to analyse a song about Mary. Below are a few student responses on the question: How is Mary portrayed in the song?
Chloe: My song describes Mary as a kind and gentle woman who listened to everyone.
Jack: Mary was a really kind person and her followers looked up to her.
Oscar and Georgia: Mary was a good person who believed that the Lord’s way was the best way.
Emmett and Abby: Mary said yes to being the Mother of Jesus and helping to make the Saviour. This shows that she is a kind and cooperative person.
World Behind the Text - The Annunciation, Luke 1:26-38
This term, our Youth Ministry team will be leading prayer every Thursday for the Year 5/6 students. Last week, Georgia D., Ava and Emily L., led our prayer in the Mercy Chapel. Josh, Emmett, Finn and Landon will be leading tomorrow’s prayer.
Mt Carmel’s Mini Vinnies News
Mini Vinnies will be organising a Sockball Challenge this Friday 4 November 2022, to raise awareness of how soccer is played in the countries supported by Catholic Mission. Students are invited to make a sockball using recycled materials and to bring it to school on Friday 4 November 2022.

All Saints’ Day Prayer Service
3JR led a beautiful prayer service on Tuesday 1 November to celebrate All Saints’ Day.
All Saints’ Day is a Christian holiday. It is celebrated on November 1 in the Roman Catholic Church and on the first Sunday after Pentecost in the Eastern Orthodox Church. (Pentecost takes place 50 days after Easter.) It is officially known as the Sunday of All Saints in the Orthodox Church and as the Solemnity of All Saints in the Roman Catholic Church (Britannica Kids, 2022, All Saint's Day).
Mt Carmel School Team for Vigil Mass
On Saturday 5 November 2022, at 6:00pm, Mt Carmel School is coordinating the Vigil Mass and we are seeking students to assist. Roles of responsibility include, proclaiming a reading, reading a Prayer of the Faithful, collection of donations, offertory, altar service and choir. A letter has been given to students who have expressed an interest in taking part in this Mass.
Please contact me if you have any queries, on 02 6226 3357 or email evangelia.karakotas@cg.catholic.edu.au.
All Saints Day Prayer
Bless the many parted souls who lived their lives with grace.
Bless the saints in heaven, gathered in that special place.
May we tell their stories and remember all the ways
they lived their faith and spent their days.
There is glory and reward, even if at first there’s strife.
Oh, blessed saints, you help us see a path that’s to eternal life.
May we always hold them dear and know their life and place.
May we know their inspiration and aspire to their grace.
Amen.

Josh Hanlon - An Inspirational Paralympian!
Last week, Josh Hanlon visited the school to speak with the students. Below are some of the children’s reflections - what an extraordinary young man!
Dear Josh,
Thank you so much for coming to my school. You have inspired me so much. You have taught me that I can do anything if I put my mind to it. I thought your presentation was really amazing. You are really brave and smart. I was amazed when you said that you taught yourself to be left handed. It was amazing that you stood up there and spoke with a lot of confidence. From Zali 4SS
Dear Josh,
Thank you for coming to my school and teaching me that if you put your mind to something you will achieve it. You were very brave and strong to get up there and show everyone who you are. You are an amazing skier and you have inspired me. From Lola 4SS
Dear Josh,
Thank you for coming to our school on Thursday. I thought that it was inspiring how you lost both of your legs and one hand and kept going all the way to the Paralympics. I like how you showed everyone about your life and how you got back up on your feet in such a short amount of time. I think it’s clever how you learnt to do everything with your other hand. From Jessica 4SS
Josh came to our school and showed us that his life has been hard but he managed to push through it. His disability didn’t stop him from reaching his goal. He taught me that you don’t need two legs and two arms to do what you desire. He was so brave to be able to say “just cut my legs off”. I thought it was funny when he said that he had the wrong sized fake legs. Jack 4SS
Dear Josh,
Thank you for coming to our school, I really appreciate it. Your presentation really showed me that even if something happens to me, I just need to keep going no matter what. You really inspired me when you said that you can do anything in life. You are a really intelligent, unique person. From Olivia 4SS
Dear Josh,
You are so inspiring. You’ve made me think I can nearly achieve anything from being a runner to a football player. I can’t believe you’ve been able to make it all the way to the Paralympics. Thank you for coming and inspiring everyone. From Lewy 4SS
Josh was inspiring, when he came to our school yesterday. He told us how when he lost his legs and his hand he didn’t stop but he kept going. He showed us that if you want to be able to accomplish something you should put your mind to it. He is a strong and resilient human– being showing us to never give up. Xavier 4SS
Dear Josh,
You are an intelligent man and inspiring person. I know no you can do anything if you put your mind to it and you can rise to anything. You’re a legend! You have inspired me to help others and be kind. I want to be an amazing person, like you. Arlie 4SS
Dear Josh,
Your presentation yesterday was inspiring. You taught me that anything is possible if you put your mind to it.
I think that you are an amazing, intelligent, inspiring and brave person. I wish you good luck in the 2026 Paralympics (not that you’ll need it). Thank you for coming to our school. Sincerely Charlie 4SS
Dear Josh,
Thank you for coming yesterday and presenting. You were so inspirational and showed us that you are very determined. I really want to ski now. Getting up on that stage and talking to half the school was really brave and courageous. It was very interesting, unlike all the other presentations they make us sit down and listen to. I was a bit scared at the start but after you spoke I realised you are an amazingly brave person. If I was to rate your presentation I would rate it 100/100. From Sofia 4SS
Yesterday, Josh Hanlon visited our school for an inspiring presentation. When I first saw him I was excited and thrilled, but also worried about how it must feel to have had three limbs amputated. He shared fascinating stories and taught us about being resilient, brave and prepared for what comes next. He also taught us that if you put your mind to it and believe in yourself, you can achieve almost anything. It was amazing and inspiring to see a Paralympian in reality. I think you’re brave, kind, very intelligent and much more. Isabelle 4SS
Dear Josh,
Your presentation yesterday was very inspiring. You taught me that anything is possible if you put your mind to it. You are a crazy legend.
I think you are an amazing person, and you were very brave talking to hundreds of children. It is incredible that you have achieved so much in so little time! I hope you keep going with your career and passion. From Ekaterina 4SS
Dear Josh,
Thank you for coming to Mt Carmel. You are intelligent, brave, inspiring and amazing. You have taught me that if we put our mind to it we can achieve it. You are an amazing sit skier. It is amazing that you have achieved something so big in such little time. From Anika Lyons 4SS
Dear Josh,
Thank you for coming. Your presentation was the best. You showed me to keep having a go at what you want to achieve and you should achieve it. Thanks Xavi 4SS
Dear Josh,
Thank you for coming to our school yesterday. I think that you were very brave to stand up and talk in front of a whole fleet of children. Your presentation was very inspiring and you taught me to always follow your dreams. And thanks again for visiting our school. From Rushad
Dear Josh,
You are an amazing, strong, brave and intelligent human-being. I can’t believe you have been through so much and you are still up and going. Losing your limbs was probably life changing and shocking but you need to know that you have inspired lots of kids like me to keep trying if we ever face challenges. You need to know you are the bravest person I have ever met. Thank you for teaching me that if you put your mind to it you can achieve anything. From Summer 4SS P.s. You are amazing.
Dear Josh,
You have inspired me to do whatever I want to do if I put my mind to it. I also thank you for coming to talk to us, I don’t think I could stand up in front of a whole school and talk to them. I think your presentation was inspiring and amazing. I think what you have achieved is awesome, I think it's very hard to achieve what you have. From Alicia 4SS
Dear Josh,
Thank you for coming to our school and spending time talking to us about your life. Your life story inspired me and it shows if you put your mind to something you can do anything. You are also an inspiration to all amputees out there. It's incredible how you made it to the paralympics in just a few years of training. Some people train their whole life and still don't make it to the Olympics or paralympics.
I hope you can win some more medals in the next paralympic games and other races. I wish you good luck and I hope you continue doing what you do.
Yours sincerely,
Henry 5/6KG.

Dear Josh Hanlon,
Thank you for coming to visit Mt Carmel school. I really appreciate you taking the time to talk to us about your life. I was really inspired by your story. You have such a positive outlook on life and it has encouraged us to never give up.
Sincerely Josh 5/6KG
Dear Josh Hanlon,
Thank you for coming in and talking about your life as a
paralympic athlete. It was really cool to see you in person. Your story was really inspiring to hear and proves to everyone just because you have a disability you can still do anything. I hope to see you again on tv for the next games. Good luck, hope you continue your passions. I hope you have a happy and long life.
Kind regards,

Dear Josh,
Thankyou for taking your time to visit our school and answer all of our questions. We are all very grateful for you competing for Australia with all your heart. I loved the part when you were talking about your years before the bacterial infection, it’s good to keep those times in your memories but still let them go at the same time. You are an inspiration to everyone big or small, disabiled or not. I love your work and I hope you get that shiny gold medal at the next olympics. But May your work inspire more schools to come.
Yours sincerely,
Hayden 5/6KG
Dear Josh,
Thankyou for coming and visiting Mt Carmel yesterday. It was a really great experience. You have shown me that whatever you put your mind to is possible, no matter how many arms or legs you have, you can do anything. Thankyou for inspiring me and many others. Good Luck for your further competitions.
Kind Regards,

Dear Josh,
It was an honour meeting you, thank you for coming to our school and giving your time to tell us about your life and the impacts it has made on your lifestyle. You are an inspiration to all the amputees and me. You have such a positive outlook and it is so inspiring to all the people that may be too scared to try new sports or anything that includes some risks.
It is also so incredible that you got into the Paralympics in only a few years, some people train their whole life and still don’t even get to the point where you are. And even more incredible that you also do wheelchair Rugby. Sometimes I think how I would even cope without a hand but you can cope without a hand and two legs.
Yours Sincerely

Dear Josh,
Thankyou for coming to visit Mt Carmel yesterday. I really admire you for telling us all about your life And what you went through. Thank you for telling me all about your life and for answering my questions.
From Emily 5/6KG
Dear Josh,
Thank you for coming to our school. I am really grateful for you coming to my school and taking your time to tell us about yourself. You really inspired me with your story and you also reminded me that nothing is impossible. When you put your mind to something you are able to do anything.
You are a really positive person and you also have a good attitude, especially after all that you have been through. You really inspire me, your skiing is also great. Getting where you are would have been so much work yet you still have a great attitude and are a positive person.
I have learned so much from you, like don’t ever give up on something just because you're different or can’t do things other people can do because no matter how hard it is to do something, if you put your mind to it you are always able to do it. So thank you so much for reminding me about all these things.
I wish you a safe journey and remember to always stay positive just like you told us. I wish you the best through your journey and your life.
Kind regards,
Megan 5/6KG
Dear Josh Hanlon,
You have inspired me and so many others and spread so much awareness with your trip to our school. Your determination was so inspiring.
People seem to think that people with disabilities are useless but I think the Paralympics are a great way of showing people that disabled people are amazing. For people to get to the Paralympics, that would just be so lifting.
You see olympians work so hard to get to the olympics and disabled people have to work harder because they have something that may hold them back in any way e.g. lost hand(s) lost leg(s) and other body parts.
I think that it should not be called disabled it should be called abled.
Kind regards,
Ava 5/6KG,
Mt Carmel School Yass
Dear Josh,
Thank you for coming to Mt Carmel School, it was a pleasure to talk with you and ask questions about you. You have inspired me to push harder in sport, and you have such a positive mindset. Even if you just lost your legs and a hand 4 years ago.
You are such an amazing person, you are so resilient and your work ethic is incredible. I would not have been able to persevere or even cope with lost legs and a lost hand. Seeing a paralympian is just awesome. But then, actually talking to you…. woah this is an experience!
I really am amazed. Just sit skiing is a real feat, but being and knowing that you are up there with the best, that is truly phenomenal.
I wish you well in future races and events, and I hope that you are well and healthy.
Yours sincerely,
Landon Glover 5/6KG

Dear Josh Hanlon,
I completely loved seeing you at school the other day, you really were amazing. I can’t even imagine what I'd do if I got my legs and hand cut off - but your story truly inspired me!
I would love to see you again and ask you so many questions, I was so amazed by how amazing you are that nothing came to my mind but WOW! If I could see you again then the first thing I would ask you is “can you please pinch me, I think i’m dreaming?!”
Anyway I know that the chances of me seeing you again are extremely low so I wrote you this letter. I figure the question I really would want to ask you is simply just “how?” How did you do it, how did you get the inspiration, how did you find the courage and bravery?
If I could see you again - even one more time - it would be like a dream come true. Thank you for coming to my school.
Kind regards,

Dear Josh,
Thank you for coming to visit Mt Carmel School yesterday. You inspired me, my friends, family and many others at Mt Carmel by coming to the school and talking to us about your amazing life. You showed us that you have persevered through everything hard and challenging in life. By answering mine and others' questions, you showed us that now matter what challenges you have had in life you can do everything a normal person could, and that everyone can achieve the same. You taught hundreds of people that nothing is impossible.
You have an amazingly awesome life and personality. You’ve had some huge challenges in your life, but your amazing personality has saved you from grief, and you giving up. Your life instantly changed with a virus you knew could kill you and you were calm and only looked on the bright side!
I really hope that everything you want to achieve, you achieve and everything that you worked and trained for pays off. I hope to see you at the next Paralympics!
Your Sincerely,

Dear Josh,
Thank you for coming yesterday. I think that It was really cool to meet an actual paralympian in real life.
I think that you are amazing and that It is really cool that you have kept going even though you have lost both of your legs and one of your hands.
I appreciate the time you have taken out of your day to come to this school. I learnt alot about you when you came because I didn't even know who you were until my teacher said that we were having a Paralympian come in the next day.
I was really excited when I went home on the bus. You have taught me and a lot of other people to be resilient and grateful, as well as hardworking and optimistic.
I would really like to try snow skiing one day because I have never been snow skiing before.
This letter is from the kid that asked you “how do you prep yourself when you are at the top of the hill?”

Dear Josh,
Thank you for coming Into our school and talking to us about your life and how you came to do alpine skiing in the Paralympics. I appreciated that you took your time to come and speak to us.
You inspired me to be more positive when I do anything in life. I also realised how lucky I am and that anything can happen to you at any age.
I am so happy that I got to meet you and learn lots about you. I love skiing, Just like you. I went to Thredbo this year and if I knew you were there as well, I would have been so happy.
I can’t wait to see you in the next winter paralympics and tell people about how I met you. I hope all the hard work and training pay off. I’ll be watching you from here in Yass. I really hope you achieve your goal and WIN GOLD!!!

Thank you for coming to our school. I really enjoyed you coming to our school and sharing your story with us. Some family friends had lost their legs too and you had a way more positive side of it compared to them. You have really inspired me to explore new things and be grateful for what I have. Thank you for coming to Mount Carmel and telling us about how you have overcome challenges. You inspired me by overcoming challenges and if you can do what you have done, we can also do great. I think it is great that you are sharing your story with children. Ithink you have done enough and you can rest easy knowing that somewhere someone is having a better day because of you.

Dear Josh Hanlon,
Thankyou, for driving a very far away mate, just for us for a very short time. Your story is very inspiring. It shows that your work ethic to get where you are now was crazy.
Most athletes play years of the same sport to make the Olympics but you somehow did it in a few years. You're a great inspiration to all kids, such as myself and all of my friends and siblings.
You helped me take into mind that nothing is impossible.
I hope all your other dreams come true through your life.

Dear Josh Hanlon,
Thank you for coming to our school yesterday. You are so amazing and I couldn't wait to meet you for the first time. You made my week and l loved seeing you ski on the TV. l can’t believe you fell ill so seriously and lost 3 limbs. That for me is just crazy. I’m stoked to finally get to meet you in person and my Mum didn’t believe me when I told her I saw you at our school. You inspired me to never stop trying to achieve new things. No matter what, you never stopped, so l will always follow how you never gave up. I was just so happy to see you.

Dear Josh,
Thank you for coming to our school. We are so grateful that you were able to come to our school and share your life story with us. In my opinion I think that you were so brave with how you had been able to keep going even after the bacterial infection and the amputations on both your legs and your right arm. That comes to a question that I didn’t get to ask on Thursday “ how did you keep on going even after what had happened and did you think negatively like you weren’t ever going to be able to do sports that you love anymore or did you try to set your mind to a positive thinking situation?”. I was really inspired by your story and I think that you should continue doing what you love and to keep sharing your story with everyone because it really is a masterpiece.
