Dear Parents, Teachers and Students,
Student Leadership
This Friday, nominations open for Year 5 students who are seeking formal leadership positions in 2023; that is, School Captains, Vice-Captains, House Captains and SRC Representatives. At Mt Carmel, our student leaders are appointed, not elected, and the process begins with students completing a nomination form addressing a selection criteria. These forms must be submitted by Friday 18 November, Week 6. Nominees then present a speech to the school in Week 7 and meet with an interview panel in Week 8. The panel will then decide on appointments, taking into consideration each nominee’s interview, application and feedback from students and teachers (via voting slips, following the speeches). I wish all who are considering nominating for these positions the very best. Nomination forms can be collected from the school office from Friday.
Independent Education Union (IEU) Protected Industrial Action
I have been informed that some IEU members from Mt Carmel School will be participating in one hour of protected industrial action in the form of a work stoppage.
The IEU has advised that the work stoppage will occur on Tuesday 15 November between 8:30am and 9:30am. As a result of this action, our school may experience staff shortages; consequently, it may be necessary to ask that your children attend school later on that day, if possible. Supervision will be provided at school for those students unable to start later, but no classes will commence before 9:30am. I will confirm specific arrangements by next Monday 14 November.
Remembrance Day
This Friday is Remembrance Day, and 5/6EG will be leading a prayer service commencing at 10:40am to mark this important event. Parents and families are welcome to attend.
New Finance and Administration System
Catholic Education is rolling out a new centralised finance system that will streamline many of our financial transactions and better utilise the administrative capabilities of Compass.
Qkr will continue to be used for the Uniform Shop and Canteen, but all other transactions will now be done through CompassPay, meaning that families will be able to submit permission notes and pay for excursions/incursions from a single portal. As part of this financial transformation, our banking details have also changed and, unfortunately, we will no longer be able to accept direct deposits for the payment of school fees. These will be able to be paid electronically via Bpay or CompassPay, or at the school office by cash or eftpos. If you currently pay school fees by direct deposit, either in a lump sum or as a periodic payment, please contact the school office for information about how to best change this arrangement.
Year 1 and 2 Swimming Program
A reminder to parents that notes for swimming are overdue. Please return these promptly so that ability-based groups can be organised. Payment for swimming at your earliest convenience would also be appreciated.
May God’s peace be in your families,
Welcome to Week 5! Kindergarten’s Religious Education unit focuses on different characters in the Old Testament, people of faith who trusted in God, even in times of adversity. The first characters explored were Abraham and Sarah from the Old Testament. During my visit to KJG and KNB, students were busy completing the below tasks:
KJG: Examine the stained glass window from Sts Anne and Joachim.
Use the Visible Thinking Strategy: See, Think, Me We
See: Label three things in the artwork.
Think: Share your thoughts with a partner.
Me: Discuss a time you have waited for something.
We: How does God speak in our lives today?
Can you see Abraham and Sarah?
KNB: God keeps His Promises
Using black paper, add two stars - one for Abraham and Sarah. Then add one for Isaac. Fill the sky with extra stars to show Abraham’s descendants.
This term, our Youth Ministry team will be leading prayer every Thursday for the Year 5 and 6 students. Last week, Josh, Emmett, Finn and Landon led our prayer in the Mercy Chapel. Abby, Bella and Georgina will be leading tomorrow’s prayer.
Mt Carmel’s Mini Vinnies News
Our Sockball Challenge in Week 4, Friday 4 November, was a hit. Many students made sockballs using recycled materials and played a variety of ball games. Congratulations to Mullungang and Hartigan who tied for first place in this challenge.
Mt Carmel School Team For Vigil Mass
Thank you to all students, staff and families for celebrating Saturday’s Mass together as a community.
Remembrance Day Prayer Service
Remembrance Day falls on the 11th of November each year. On the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month, a minute's silence is observed and dedicated to those soldiers who died fighting to protect the nation. Our Mt Carmel community has many defence force veterans who have dedicated their lives to serve the nation. We thank them for their service.
5/6EG will be leading a prayer service this Friday 11 November to celebrate Remembrance Day. The prayer service will start at 10.40 am in the PAC and parents and friends are invited to join us.
Gospel - Luke 6:37-38
“Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”
Reflection
What words or phrases struck you in this Gospel reading?
What might God be prompting you to consider or inviting you to do in and through the Gospel?
