Dear Parents, Teachers and Students,
Student Leadership
This Friday 18 November, nominations close for Year 5 students who are seeking formal leadership positions in 2023; that is, School Captains, Vice-Captains, House Captains and SRC Representatives. At Mt Carmel, our student leaders are appointed, not elected, and the process begins with students completing a nomination form addressing a selection criteria. Next Wednesday 23 November, we will hold an assembly at 11:30am for the nominees to present their speeches to the school; parents are warmly invited to attend. The final step in the selection process will be Leadership interviews on Monday 28 November.
Colour Fun Day
The ongoing wet weather has been making it very difficult to reschedule this event. Every time the ovals begin to dry out another weather system comes through and saturates the grounds again… it’s been very frustrating, especially for the students who haven’t made it on to the Lower Grass at play times all term! As promised, though, we will have the Colour Fun Day this term and have decided on Friday 9 December, Week 9, as an exciting celebration to help wrap up the school year. The fundraising incentive prizes have been delivered and will be distributed to students next week. Our grateful thanks to all families for your support and for your patience with the delays to this event.
End-of-Year Events
Now that we have passed the mid-term hump and are on the downhill run to Christmas, we are excited to be able to invite families to join us in our end-of-year celebrations. Advent starts in Week 8, and 1AH will lead us in a Prayer Assembly at 9am on Monday morning, 28 November. In Week 9, KNB will lead our prayer for the second week of Advent, and it will be KJG’s turn in Week 10.
At 12pm on Tuesday 13 December, Week 10, we will be holding our Christmas Concert, featuring a Nativity play and a range of traditional and modern Christmas performances. At 9am on Wednesday 14 December, we will have a Year 3-5 awards assembly to recognise the efforts and achievements of our Primary students; parents will be notified in advance if their child will be receiving an award and are welcome to attend. On Thursday 15 December, we will be holding our Graduation Mass at 9:30am in St Augustine’s Church, with Year 6 awards being presented in the church at the conclusion of Mass. After Recess, at 11:30am, we will hold our traditional Farewell Assembly to wish our School Leaders well for their journey to High School.
All of these events are listed on our school calendar, which can be found on our website at https://www.mtcarmel.nsw.edu.au/calendar.
Year 1 and 2 Swimming
We are very disappointed to pass on the news that the Yass Pool does not have any swimming instructors available to run the Learn-to-Swim program within school hours. For those families who have already paid, the easiest way for us to refund you is to apply a credit to school fees (if you have already paid your fees this term, then the credit will be applied to next year’s Term 1 fee statement). If you would prefer a direct refund, please contact the school office by next Friday, 25 November, and provide us with your bank details.
Parent Webinar - Vaping
This Thursday 17 November, from 7pm to 8:30pm, the Council of Catholic School Parents NSW/ACT in collaboration with the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle – Federation of Parents & Friends Associations invites parents to attend a free webinar about the dangers of vaping. The webinar will be hosted by Paul Dillion from Drug and Alcohol Research Training Australia (DARTA), who has been working in the area of drug education for more than 25 years. To register, scan the QR code on the flier attached to this newsletter.
May God’s peace be in your families,
Welcome to week 6! 4SS students are learning about the seven sacraments of the Catholic Church. The seven sacraments are organised into three categories:
Below are a few student responses on the question: What do the sacraments mean to you?
Zali: I felt nervous when I received my first Sacrament of Reconciliation but I was happy to receive my first Eucharist.
Alicia: The sacraments make me feel proud, refreshing and forgiving.
Xavier: Through the Sacraments I extend my faith as a Christian and I make a commitment. Once you receive your sacrament of Eucharist you become more Catholic.
Jack: Through Baptism I became a Christian and through Eucharist I received Jesus.
During my visit to 4TC, the students set up a special prayer space and led the class prayer.
This term, our Youth Ministry team will be leading prayer every Thursday for the Year 5/6 students. Last week, Abby and Bella led our prayer in the Mercy Chapel. Charlotte, Megan and Zeva will be leading tomorrow’s prayer.
Mt Carmel’s Mini Vinnies News
Tomorrow the Vinnies Canberra School Team will be visiting Mt Carmel School to launch the Vinnies Christmas Appeal. Each classroom will be provided with a basket for donations. At the end of the term, we will be delivering them to the St Augustine’s Conference, Yass, of St Vincent de Paul. We are seeking your support to help those less fortunate in our community through generous donations of non-perishable food items. Your generosity and support is most appreciated. St Augustine’s Conference has requested the following items:
Thank you to 5/6EG and Mrs Glover for leading a beautiful prayer service.
Prayer and Reflection
Let us be still and ask the Holy Spirit to be with us.
Dear Father,
Be with us as we pray.
Open our ears to hear your Word in the Gospel.
Unite us in faith, hope and love as we pray together.
Send your Holy Spirit to inspire and sustain us in our mission.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
I invite you to participate in a 3 minute prayer reflecting on a Scripture passage.
