Dear families,
I would like to start this week’s Carmeletta by sharing a story with you.
Yesterday, I received a phone call from a member of the public to report the behaviour of a Mt Carmel student after school on Monday. The caller had witnessed a student in our school uniform walking down Comur Street, who noticed that the wreaths around the cenotaph in front of the Memorial Hall had been blown across the pavement by the day’s high winds. This student stopped, gathered up the fallen wreaths, and reverently placed them back in position before going on their way. Thank you, sincerely, to that Good Samaritan; I am so proud to be part of this beautiful school community.
Student Leadership 2023
Congratulations to all the Year 5 students who, today, presented their speeches for Student Leadership positions in 2023; the standard of speeches this year was outstanding! The next step in the process will be a panel interview next Wednesday 30 November; please note, this date has changed from Monday 28. Good luck to all of our potential leaders.
Advent
Advent, our season of waiting and preparation for the birth of Christ, commences this Sunday. The passing of the weeks of Advent are traditionally marked with the lighting of five candles in an Advent wreath: one for each Sunday of Advent and one for Christmas day. The first candle is violet and represents hope; the second, also violet, represents peace; the third candle is pink and represents joy; the fourth, violet, represents love; and the final, central, candle is white and represents the light of Christ coming into the world. Please join us for our Advent Prayer Service next Monday at 9am in the PAC, led by 1AH, as we light out first candle, beginning our journey towards Christmas, and pray for hope:
Christ our Hope,
Shine in our lives with hope and promise. Open our eyes to see you in others. Help us to be people of hope.
We await your coming with gratitude.
Amen
Years 1 & 2 Swimming Program
A reminder to parents that the Year 1 and 2 swimming program that was due to commence next week has, unfortunately, been cancelled because of unavailability of staff at the pool. For those families who have already paid, the easiest way for us to refund you is to apply a credit to school fees (if you have already paid your fees this term, then the credit will be applied to next year’s Term 1 fee statement). If you would prefer a direct refund, please contact the school office by this Friday, 25 November, and provide us with your bank details.
May God’s peace be in your families,
Welcome to week 7! 3MA students are learning about the significance of the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist) for the Church community.
Below are a few student responses to the question: What do the Sacraments mean to you?
Georgie: The Sacraments allow you to belong to the Church community and follow in Jesus’ steps.
Molly-Ann: The sacraments are important to everyone who believes in God and Jesus.
Rory: They mean to join the Church community and feel part of the Church. It is a sign to God that I am loyal.
Kalon: To be part of God’s family.
4ML students are learning about the significance of community for Christians and focusing on Jesus’ mission. Students created posters to show that Jesus’ mission is evident in our Mt Carmel School community.
This term, our Youth Ministry team will be leading prayer every Thursday for the Year 5 and 6 students. Last week, Charlotte, Megan and Zeva led our prayer in the Mercy Chapel. Zara H. and Gabby D., will be leading tomorrow’s prayer.
Mt Carmel’s Mini Vinnies News
Last week Mt Carmel launched the Vinnies Christmas Appeal and each classroom has been provided with a basket for donations. At the end of the term, we will be delivering them to the St Augustine’s Conference, Yass, of St Vincent de Paul.
We are seeking your support to help those less fortunate in our community through generous donations of non-perishable food items. Your generosity and support is most appreciated. St Augustine’s Conference has requested the following items:
Fr Peter spoke to the students about the Sacrament of Reconciliation after Friday Parish Mass.
Children's Liturgy at Saint Augustine's Church 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month at 10:15am, all welcome.
Advent
The liturgical season of Advent starts on Sunday 27 November, the fourth Sunday before Christmas. Advent means ‘coming’ and it is a time of preparation, waiting and praying for the arrival of Jesus Christ.
1AH will lead our Week 1 Advent Prayer Service next Monday morning at 9am. Parents and families are welcome to attend.
Prayer
Jesus Christ, King of the Universe Help us, guide us and give us strength as we strive to share your light with others. May all those to whom we minister, through our witness, encounter you and know the power of your unconditional love. Amen.
