Dear Parents, Teachers and Students,
Advent
Christ our Hope,
Shine in our lives with hope and promise. Open our eyes to see you in others. Help us to be people of hope.
We await your coming with gratitude.
Amen
Thank you to Mrs Hall and 1AH for leading us in a beautiful prayer assembly to mark our first Week of Advent. Next Monday, at 9am, KNB will be leading our second Advent prayer assembly. Parents are welcome to join us.
2023 Student Leaders
It is my pleasure to congratulate the following students who, following a comprehensive selection process, have been appointed as Student Leaders for 2023:
School Captains - Max Harding and Abby McEvoy
Vice Captains - Landon Glover and Mia Pholi
Year 6 SRC Representatives - Jayden Smith, Pia de Nanteuil and Emma Barker
Fielding House - Christopher Potter and Milla Shelton
Hartigan House - Emmett Crocker and Mackenna Leahy
McAuley House - Sidney Luckie and Imogen Maher
Mullungang House - Annabella Nagle and Stella Pack
There was a very strong field of candidates who put themselves forward for consideration and, although everyone cannot be successful in this process, each student represented themselves with immense pride for their school, teachers and classmates and will no doubt show their leadership potential in other ways as Year 6 Leaders in 2023.
Next Friday, 9 December, we will be (finally) holding our Colour Fun Day. The Colour Fun activities will be held in the afternoon, following an early sausage-sizzle lunch. All students will be provided with a sausage sandwich and an ice-block for lunch at 12:30pm; all dietary needs will be catered for. The canteen will also be open for lunch orders, but with a limited menu. After lunch we will hold a series of fun (and colourfully messy) rotation activities. Students can wear mufti on Friday, preferably light colours, and certainly clothes that can get dirty. During some activities, colourfully dyed powders will be thrown over students. The powders are low-allergy, cornstarch-based, non-staining and made to be safe for contact. A material safety data sheet can be found later in the newsletter. Students who are catching a bus home on Friday afternoon will need to bring a change of clothes and a plastic bag to put their dirty clothes in.
My very grateful thanks to Georgina Shannon for her assistance in organising the event and for coordinating the distribution of fundraising prizes. As a school, we have raised $12,000 to help brighten up our playground.
Uniform Shop Additional Opening Times
The Uniform Shop will be open from 10am to 3:00pm on Monday 5 December and Monday 12 December, in addition to the usual Tuesdays 2:30-4pm. The Uniform Shop will also be open from 10am to 3:00pm on Friday 27 January, the week before school commences.
Term Dates 2023
At the beginning of next year, Catholic Education is holding a System Day for staff professional development on Monday 30 January. This means that all students, K-6 will commence Term 1 on Tuesday 31 January. Term 1 concludes on Thursday 6 April.
May God’s peace be in your families,
Welcome to week 8! 3JR students are learning about the significance of the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist) for the Church community. Below are a few student responses to the question: How is Jesus present during the celebration of Mass?
Hugh: Through the crosses in the church.
Zoe: When the priest is talking about Jesus and when I receive the bread.
Poppy: People gather to learn about Jesus. We listen to the readings from the Lectionary.
Phoebe: When I get blessed and the priest is reading from the Lectionary. Also, the priest thinks about Jesus a lot.

1AH Practising for their Advent Prayer Service
This term, our Youth Ministry team will be leading prayer every Thursday for the Year 5 and 6 students. Last week, Zara H. and Gabby D. led our prayer in the Mercy Chapel.
Hayden, Harry and Chloe will be leading tomorrow’s prayer.
Advent
Advent begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas and this week is the first week of Advent. 1AH led a beautiful Advent Prayer Service on Monday morning. Advent means ‘coming’ and it is a time of preparation, waiting and praying for the arrival of Jesus Christ.
KNB will lead our Week 2 Advent Prayer Service next Monday morning at 9am in the PAC. Parents and families are welcome to attend.
Vinnies Christmas Appeal
Thank you to all the families who have provided donations for the Vinnies Christmas Appeal. It is great to see so many baskets filled with donations!
First Reconciliation
Congratulations to all the students who celebrated their First Reconciliation on Wednesday 23 November at St Augustine’s Church.
Gospel and Reflection
Mark 13:33-37
“Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come. It’s like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with their assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch. “Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back—whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. What I say to you, I say to everyone: ‘Watch!’ ”
The key message of this passage is to ‘Watch’ and to welcome Christ into our life during Advent. He is here already but he wants to come closer.
How can I keep in touch with God and others?
How can I prepare for the coming of the Lord?

3JR and 3MA are currently working on the Cyber Castle Challenge from Questacon. Using Minecraft Education, students work in small groups to protect their assets (chickens) against pesky threats (foxes). It is an amazing opportunity to practise our digital skills and also learn about the importance of Cyber Safety in our own lives.
The Challenge takes place over 4 lessons and this week the classes are working through Session One - defending assets and balancing resources. It is challenging, fun and engaging! The Library Computer Lab was abuzz with discussions, learning and laughs!
WE LEARNT
Isla: I learnt about how to use Minecraft a lot more.
Jax: I learnt that you need to protect our chickens from foxes. We managed to keep the gates closed when they came close to our coop.
David: I learnt that Minecraft Education is one where you can’t mine.
Abby: I learnt how to play with a computer, instead of my iPad.
From Questacon: The Cyber Castle Challenge game encourages players to explore, discover and set their own priorities. In-game achievements guide players to understand cyber security concepts. The game is open-ended and exciting. It encourages players to solve problems using critical and creative thinking.
