Dear Parents, Teachers and Students,
Book Week
Book Week is always an exciting time at our school, and this year is no exception! The theme for Book Week this year is Read, Grow, Inspire, and our Library has been transformed into a garden of inspirational displays celebrating children’s literature. Congratulations and sincere thanks to Mrs Broers and Mrs Patmore for the many hours of work that have gone into preparing for this special week, and well done to all staff and students for their terrific book displays. Parents and families are most welcome to visit our Library to admire everyone’s work, if you haven’t had a chance already. Todays Book Week parade was tremendous fun; it’s always entertaining to see everyone’s creative costume ideas. Special thanks to Claire Pholi, Liz Da Deppo and Camille Young, for their help preparing our sausage sizzle lunch. Tomorrow, author Barbie Robinson and Illustrator Ian Robertson will be visiting to run a book talk with 3-6 classes.
Sports Uniform
For the next two Thursdays (that’s tomorrow and Week 7), all classes will be participating in AFL clinics at school, so we will be changing sports uniform days from Friday to Thursday. For the sake of clarity, and because I’m sure some students will try to wrangle it, that’s a change of uniform days, not an extra sports uniform day. We’ll return to the usual arrangement from Week 7.
Mr Tim’s School Extravaganza
A save-the-date reminder for all families. Mr Tim is visiting Mt Carmel in Week 9 for a great celebration of the performing arts in our school, culminating in a whole-school concert on Thursday 14 September at 6pm in the PAC.
Prayer Assemblies
Next week we will be holding two prayer assemblies. On Monday 28 August, 5AH will be leading a prayer assembly for the Feast of Saint Augustine, patron of our parish, and on Friday 1 September, 4TD will be leading our prayer assembly for Father’s Day. They will both be held in the PAC at 9am and families are welcome to attend.
CWA Poster Competition
The CWA Poster Competition is open again, and this year’s country of focus is Australia! There are three different classifications of entry that students can participate in:
- Colouring-in Competition (Kindergarten and Year 1) – there are two options to choose from, either a kangaroo or an emu, which can be printed from this newsletter or collected from the school office;
- Poster (all ages) – to be completed on a large sheet or cardboard, containing pictures and information about “My Australian Home”;
- Postcard (all ages) – to be completed on an A4 page, promoting an event or feature of the local area, a template/design guide can be found in this newsletter.
All entries need to be clearly labelled on the back with the school, class and name of the entrant. Entries will be collected from the school office on the Tuesday 10 October, which is the first day of Term 4. Students may choose to keep the competition aside for a school holiday project, but late entries will not be accepted. We therefore encourage interested students to complete their entry and drop it to the school office by the end of this term.
Family Event with Andrew Fuller
Catholic School Parents Canberra and Goulburn are offering a free Family Event with renowned psychologist Andrew Fuller, being hosted at St John Paul II College on Tuesday 5 September at 6pm. There is an option for live streaming for parents and carers that are unable to attend in-person. The event aims to brings families from across the Archdiocese together and give them practical ways they can support their child in their learning. A flier with registration information can be found at the end of this newsletter.
May God’s peace be in your families,
Michael Green
Principal
Religious Education in the Classroom
Welcome to Week 6! 5KG students are examining the key parts of the Catholic Rite of Confirmation and focusing on the statement of inquiry: How does the Holy Spirit work in my life and in the lives of others? Students will be able to identify words, symbols, actions and significance in the lives of believers. During my visit, students explored the importance of the Fruits and Gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Mt Carmel’s Mini Vinnies News
Wear a Beanie Fundraiser 2023
Thank you to all the students, staff, and families who supported this event to support our local St Augustine’s Vinnies Conference. We have raised $290!

In Luke’s Gospel, when asked what the Kingdom of Heaven is like, Jesus portrays salvation as participation in a wedding feast where those invited have declined the invitation, thinking other commitments are more important. It becomes a feast where those least likely to be invited - complete strangers, foreigners, sinners and the poor have pride of place. If heaven is an eternal celebration, a lavish festive table to which I am invited, I need to know that those with pride of place will be most marginalised in our society, the poorest, the sickest, the least able. The question we need to ask is do we want to feast, to share a table, for eternity with them. There’s people knocking at our door. Let’s answer and generously welcome them to a place at our table.
