Dear Parents, Teachers and Students,
Father’s Day Prayer Service and Assembly
This Sunday is Father’s Day; I pray that all of the fathers, grandfathers and other men who are special in the lives of our children have a truly blessed day. This Friday, at 9am, 4TD will be hosting our Father’s Day prayer service in the PAC. All families, but especially dads and other significant male role-models, are warmly invited to attend.
Sports Uniform
A reminder that tomorrow (Thursday), students in all classes have been asked to wear their Sports uniform instead of Friday, for participation in an AFL clinic. Regular school uniform should be worn on Friday.
The usual uniform arrangements (Sports uniform to be worn on Tuesday and Friday) will return next week.
Mr Tim’s School Extravaganza
It’s now just a fortnight until Mr Tim comes to Mt Carmel to help us prepare our School Extravaganza concert – we’re very excited! Remember, the concert will be on Thursday 14 September at 6pm in the PAC. There is no cost to attend the concert, but the four-day incursion has a cost of $15 per student, which is payable via Compass.
CWA Poster Competition
The CWA Poster Competition is open again, and this year’s country of focus is Australia! There are three different classifications of entry that students can participate in:
- Colouring-in Competition (Kindergarten and Year 1) – there are two options to choose from, either a kangaroo or an emu, which can be printed from this newsletter or collected from the school office;
- Poster (all ages) – to be completed on a large sheet or cardboard, containing pictures and information about “My Australian Home”;
- Postcard (all ages) – to be completed on an A4 page, promoting an event or feature of the local area, a template/design guide can be found in this newsletter.
All entries need to be clearly labelled on the back with the school, class and name of the entrant. Entries will be collected from the school office on the Tuesday 10 October, which is the first day of Term 4. Students may choose to keep the competition aside for a school holiday project, but late entries will not be accepted. We therefore encourage interested students to complete their entry and drop it to the school office by the end of this term.
May God’s peace be in your families,
Michael Green
Principal
Religious Education in the Classroom
Welcome to Week 7! Year 1’s Religious Education unit examines Mary, Mother of Jesus, and that we have significant role models in our lives who shape who we are. We walked around the school grounds and visited Mercy chapel to look at images and statues of Mary. Using the Visible Thinking Routine: See, Think, Wonder, students examined the images and statues.

Kindergarten students have been exploring the Gospel passage of the Good Samaritan.

Feast of St Augustine Prayer Service
5AH led a lovely prayer service to celebrate the feast day of the patron of our parish, St Augustine. St Augustine teaches us that no matter how far you may stray from God’s love, God will always take you back.

Father’s Day Prayer Service
On Friday 1 September, 4TD will lead a prayer service to celebrate Father’s Day in the PAC at 9am. Families are welcome to attend.

Wear a Beanie Fundraiser 2023
Thank you to all the students, staff and families who supported this event to support our local St Augustine’s Conference. We have raised $300!

Prayer
God our Father,
Help us to know of our salvation in your love poured out in Christ your Son.
Just as you have reserved a place for us at your heavenly table,
May there always be a place in our heart and so a chair at our table for those most in need
We ask this prayer through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
St Augustine’s Parish News
On Sunday 27 August, we explored Peter as the foundation of Jesus’ Church. The children made Churches with Peter as the foundation, and themselves with Jesus in their hearts carrying on Jesus’ mission.

Todd Woodbridge Cup
Congratulations to those students who participated in the Todd Woodbridge Cup today. We hope you had lots of fun and learnt some new skills along the way. Thank you to Mrs Swadling who suprervising the students today.
AFL Clinics
AFL Canberra is kindly providing free clinics to the entire school, finishing tomorrow. Just a reminder that Sports Day has moved from Friday to Thursday to accommodate this. Don’t forget your uniform!
Boorowa Touch and Netball Carnival
It is time to start getting organised for the Boorowa Touch and Netball Carnival, which will be held on 20th October (Friday Week 2, Term 4). It is an expectation that all Year 2-5 students attend the event. Unfortunately, the carnival clashes with Year 6 camp this year so they will be unable to attend. Teachers are starting to organise students into mixed year level teams according to their preferred sport. You will receive more information about the event in the coming weeks as the date gets closer. Although it is an expectation that students attend, if you know your child will be absent on the day, please let their class teacher know so that they can plan accordingly.
Please check the C & G website and the Facebook page for information about upcoming events https://www.sport.cg.catholic.edu.au/calendar.

Celebrating Book Week
Our Book Week celebrations continued throughout last week, with our students being able to celebrate Australian books, authors and illustrators in a variety of ways.

Library Monitor Dance
Well done to the Year 5 Library Monitors for such an entertaining performance at the parade! Thank you to Mrs Harvey for working with the monitors and helping them to perfect their performance.
Visiting Author and Illustrator
On Thursday we were fortunate to have author Barbie Robinson and illustrator/artist Ian Robertson visiting Mt Carmel. They are an award winning team who have created three books together. All students in Years 3-6 attended a presentation by Barbie and Ian about how books come from concept to product, with particular reference to the way their three books were created.
Thank you to Akka Ballenger for initiating the visit from Barbie and Ian to Mt Carmel.

Book Quiz
At lunchtime on Thursday students were invited to the library to test their literary knowledge with a Book Quiz. The students were challenged by 25 questions about books, authors and illustrators and as a team were able to answer all 25 questions correctly.
Planting Bean Seeds
In keeping with the Book Week theme, Read Grow Inspire, students were able to come to the library courtyard on Friday and plant a bean seed. Thank you Sofia Da Deppo and Rushad Chowdhury for your assistance in making the paper pots. Thanks to Lola Finnigan, Charlie Field, Rosie Rainger and Ellie Carroll for helping on the day.

Book Parade BBQ Volunteers
As mentioned last week the Book Parade was a great celebration! Such events are not possible without the help from members of our school community.
Special thanks to Claire Pholi, Liz Da Deppo and Millie Young, for their help preparing our sausage sizzle lunch.
Thank you
I would like to thank all the wonderful staff of Mt Carmel for their support and participation in our Book Week activities and events. In particular, I would like to thank our Library Assistant, Lynne Patmore for the many hours of work she devoted to making the library displays and the Book Week celebrations so successful.
