Dear Parents, Teachers and Students,
Term Dates
The last day of Term 1 will be this Friday 12 April. Term 2 commences for students on Wednesday 1 May, following two pupil-free days for staff professional development and administration on Monday 29 and Tuesday 30 April. The start of Term 2 means a change to the winter school uniform. The Uniform Shop’s last day of trading before the new term will be Thursday 11 April. Any online orders placed through the holidays will be collated on Monday 29 April and be available for collection from the school office on Tuesday 30th. The uniform shop will also be open for face-to-face purchasing on Tuesday 30 April between 12pm and 2pm.
Interim Reports and Parent-Teacher Interviews
Interim Reports for all students will be published via Compass on Friday. To view your child’s report, go to their profile, select the Reports tab, and click 2024 - Interim Report Term 1. Please bear in mind that the Interim Report is not an academic report but is designed to provide parents with a general insight into the work habits and social skills that students have been displaying as they have settled into the start of the new school year.
Parent-Teacher Interviews will be held throughout the day on Tuesday 30 April, except for 3 Red, whose interviews will be held on Friday 10 May. Bookings are now open on Compass; you can either select ‘Click here for booking’ in the green box at the trop right of your Home screen, or select ‘Book Parent Student Teacher Conference’ in your child’s profile. On Monday 29 April, families will receive a notification from Compass containing a MS Teams invitation for your interview. If you would prefer to have your interview face-to-face, just come to your child’s classroom at your appointed time, but please email your child’s teacher the day before so they know to expect you in person. Please be respectful of the 15-minute time limit for interviews, as teachers have many to get through and interviews that run over time can have a significant knock-on effect. If any matters arise that require further discussion, please feel free to organise a meeting at another, mutually convenient time.
Cross Country
The Primary Cross Country carnival was held yesterday morning at Walker Park and was a very successful event. Congratulations to Barnaby Rainger, Harvey Matthews, Roy Mitchell, Baxter McDonald, Asher Gorman, William Walsh, Zoey Mitchell, Neva Welsh, Chloe Lyons, Evie Mitchell, Makaila Hooper, Hannah Maher, Lachlan Inkster Eddy Finnigan, Billy Field, Jack Maher, Benji Carroll, Charley Shoring, Lily Butt, Claire Coster, Gracie Lyons, Evelyn Morris, Jessica Hardy, Esther Payne, Milton McDonald, Spencer Crocker, Jackson Shelton, Patrick Dawes, Marlowe Clark, James Roe, Macy Camilleri, Phoebe Reynolds, Zoe Leahy, Abby Hillman, Amelia Hooper, Ellie Carroll, Lewis Matthews, Joshua Northey, Henry Gooley, Xavier Doyle, Jordan Mackay, Hunter Cullen, Juliette Glover, Reece Flynn, Zoe Seselja, Lucy Miller, Sophie Connell-Hewlett and Rosie Rainger, who all qualified to represent Mt Carmel at the Northern Region Cross Country on Friday 3 May in Braidwood.
Unfortunately, we had less fortune with the Infants carnival, with a hail storm cutting things short before the first event had been completed! Because the forecast for the rest of the week is fine, with warm days, we will hold the Infants Carnival this Friday 12 April at 12:30pm, rather than hold off until next term and risk another bout of cold and rain. It should be a lovely way to celebrate the end of the school term.
Anzac Day Parade
As always, Mt Carmel School will be marching in the ANZAC Day parade on 25 April, and I encourage as many students as possible to attend. The march commences at 10:45am, so Mt Carmel students (in winter uniform) need to assemble outside the Liberty Theatre in Lead Street at 10.30am. The ANZAC ceremony will conclude outside the Yass Memorial Hall at approximately 11:45am.
Happy Holidays
And finally, I would like to thanks all students and teachers for their hard work this term and wish everyone the best for the coming school holidays — may you all have a safe, restful and joy-filled break. Take care, and I look forward to seeing everyone back at school next term.
May God’s peace be in your families,
Michael Green
Principal
Religious Education in the Classroom
Welcome to the last week of Term 1! Year 4’s Religious Education unit examines The Holy Trinity and students had the opportunity to represent the Holy Trinity on a Celtic Trinity Knot. I asked a few students to explain the Holy Trinity in their own words:
Evelyn: The Holy Trinity is like an apple: the core is the Father, the flesh is the Son and the skin is the Holy Spirit.
Zoey: The Holy Trinity reminds me of a clover because it has three parts but it is one.
Charlie: The Holy Trinity is like a light bulb because it has three seperate parts to make electricity.
Rowan: The Holy Trinity reminds me of the cross because the three parts, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit make the holy cross, which is like the Holy Trinity.

Please pray for the children as they prepare for their First Holy Communion.
Lord Jesus,
Bless all the children preparing to receive Holy Communion for the first time.
May that day be an initial step into a life-long love of the Eucharist.
Give them a hunger for this sacred food so that they will turn to you for comfort, guidance and wisdom as they grow into full discipleship.
May their hands, extended in anticipation of your Body and Blood, inspire all of us to cherish this sacred sacrament.
Amen.

Late last year, our school won a grant from the IEU and Teachers Mutual bank to purchase a plastic extrusion machine and a mould that we can use to recycle plastic into new objects.
To see it in action, go to: https://youtu.be/9Hmp4K3NwB0?t=3
The mould we purchased is to make bag tags with the Mt Carmel logo (above). After many hours playing around with the machine and experimenting, we have finally started to produce good results. Next term we will start production in earnest and we will need lots of help from the students. Appropriate plastic will need to be collected, sorted, washed, shredded and extruded in order for us to produce the bag tags. Interested students will be involved in this process during break times and designated class time. At this stage, what we need from the community is lots of plastic lids that are either LDPE, HDPE or PP.
Look for these symbols under the lid to make sure they are the right ones. Thanks in advance! We look forward to getting this exciting project off the ground next term.

Canteen News - No Slushys This Week
As most of the kids know, the slushy machine has had one side broken for a number of weeks now, only allowing one flavour of slushy each day.
Tomorrow, we will be recieving a new machine; however, this means that the current machine has been emptied and cleaned ready for collection. The new machine won't be ready for use until next term.
Hot chocolates will be available this week and will be available in Term 3.
Please note that our Medium Hats are currently out of stock, an order has been placed, but we are just waiting on its arrival. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.
Ordering Options - Uniform orders can be placed online via Qkr! or by order form, which can be collected and paid for from the front office.
All Qkr! orders placed before 2pm each Thursday will be bundled up and sent home with your child on Friday afternoon. Order Forms can be collected from the front office if needed.
Please note that if the incorrect size/item is ordered or the size selected does not fit correctly, please return the item along with a note regarding changes required to the front office, so the correct size/item can be sent home.
Clothing Pool - Closed Until Term 2
We are in particular need of girls winter uniforms if anyone has any at home to donate. Donations can be left at the front office.
Any profit made from the clothing pool will be directly donated to the Vinnies Food appeal generally held twice a year.
If you have any questions, please contact Liz on lizdadeppo@gmail.com.
