Dear Parents, Teachers and Students,
Open Classrooms and Semester One Reports
It’s hard to believe that we’re already half way through Term 2, and teachers have already started preparing reports to be published on Friday of Week 10. In order to provide parents with some context for the reports, and to give students a chance to show off some of their great learning this semester, we will be holding Open Classrooms on Wednesday 3 July, Week 10.
Athletics Carnival
It’s Groundhog Day! For a second week running, a significant rain event is forecast for the coming days, so it is highly likely that the Athletics Carnival will again need to be postponed. We have next Friday 14 June booked as a backup date, and a decision will be published by Compass notification tomorrow.
Sacramental Program
Congratulations to Mikayla Black, Vincent Da Deppo, Isabelle Davis, Sophie Donoghue, George Douglas, Gabriel Dunstan, Chloe Callow, Billy Field, Atticus Gilchrist, Jessica Hardy, Jack Maher, Benjamin O’Reily and Lucy Pearce, who celebrated the sacrament of First Holy Communion at Mass last Sunday. Thank you to all the Sacramental team who helped our students prepare for this milestone event in their faith life, and special thanks to Charlie Field, Isabella Dunstan, Lucy Miller and Sofia Da Deppo, who joined Mrs Harvey and me with the Parish Music Ministry to sing at Mass.
The next sacrament on our parish calendar is Confirmation. Children of Catholic Faith in Year 6 and above, who have not yet received the Sacrament of Confirmation, are invited to do so on Thursday 22 September 2024.
The sacrament timetable and Registration details can be found on the parish website http://staug-yass.org.au under the Sacraments tab, or further in the newsletter. Please read through all dates and information, noting that registrations close on Friday 5 July 2024. There are a number of other compulsory dates during the preparation, so please make note of them in your calendar.
I would also like to take a moment to acknowledge Kassie Miller, who after more than 10 years assisting the Sacramental Team is stepping down from the role. Thank you, Kassie, for your dedication to supporting the faith development of the children in our school and parish.
Further in this newsletter is a message from the Sacramental Team, who are seeking to recruit some more helpers for this important role.
Vinnies CEO Sleepout
It is now just a little over two weeks until I’ll be joining the Vinnies CEO Sleepout at Parliament House. My personal goal is to raise $4000 for this important cause this year. If you are in a position to help, please consider going to https://www.ceosleepout.org.au/fundraisers/michaelgreen/act to make a donation.
If you are thinking of contributing, though, can I ask you to hold off until tomorrow morning, because at 8am on Thursday, every donation I receive up to $1000 can be matched, thanks to the generosity of Vinnie’s Dollar Match sponsor, the Daly family of Curtin, ACT. For example, donating $100 will give me another $100 on my Vinnies CEO Sleepout page. It’s an easy way to double your impact for vulnerable people who urgently need housing, food and support services.
To get your donation matched, please donate right on 8am tomorrow, and not a second before. The match will continue until the ACT event reaches $60,000 in matched funding… which could be just minutes! With your generous donation, more vulnerable Australians can access a safe and stable home.
Mini Vinnies Sleepout and Beanie Day
Next Thursday 13 June, Vinnies will be helping our Year 6 students to raise awareness of the issue of homelessness with a mini School Sleepout. Participating students will come to school at 5pm for a presentation and activities led by the Vinnies team, we’ll then have a simple shared dinner and then students will take a few basic resources (sleeping bag, pillow and some cardboard boxes) and set themselves up for an hour of ‘sleep’ outside on our school playground.
To help support our Year 6 students taking part in the mini Sleepout, we are also inviting all students to wear their favourite beanie to school next Thursday and bring a gold-coin donation, which will go directly to our local Yass Vinnies Conference to support the valuable work they do in our own community.
Colour My World - SRC House Spririt Challenge
The SRC invites all students to create a beautiful, colour-filled picture or painting of whatever inspires them and brightens their world for our House Spirit Challenge. Pictures are due to Mrs Harvey by next Friday 14 June.
Happy Long Weekend
And finally for this week, I would like to wish everyone a happy King’s Birthday long weekend. If you are travelling, stay safe; if you’re staying home, stay warm.
May God’s peace be in your families,
Michael Green
Principal
Religious Education in the Classroom
Welcome to Week 6! On Thursday 23 May, Year 3-6 students participated in Social Justice workshops focusing on homelessness and the importance of the Winter Appeal for our Yass community. The workshop links in with the Catholic Social Teachings and meanings behind why we advocate for social justice, putting values into action and making it highly relevant, relatable and practical for students.
Our Lady, Help of Christians Prayer Service
Thank you to Ms Grace and 5 Green for leading a beautiful prayer service.

Prayer and Reflection
Let us be still and ask the Holy Spirit to be with us.
Dear Father,
Be with us as we pray.
Open our ears to hear your Word in the Gospel.
Unite us in faith, hope and love as we pray together.
Send your Holy Spirit to inspire and sustain us in our mission.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
I invite you to participate in a 3 minute prayer reflecting a Scripture passage

Did you know that Catholic Education and our school has a Child Safe Policy which outlines our approach to child safety? This can be accessed on the Catholic Education Safeguarding Page. We encourage you to visit this page and review our policy. As part of our approach to child safety, Mrs Jan Harvey is also our school Child Safe Advocate who works closely with our staff regarding our approach and response to child safety matters. This approach involves proactive strategies to safeguard our students as well as responding to areas of concern. The area of child safety includes many parts of a school's operation such as day-to-day activities, school events and school camps.

Join the Yass Sacramental Team
The facilitation of the Sacramental Program has been conscientiously carried out by Parishioners who devote their time to help teach the children of our Parish the importance, relevance, and reasoning for the Sacraments of Reconciliation, First Holy Communion and Confirmation. The Yass Sacramental team is needing some more ‘hands on deck’. It is a rewarding, enjoyable and flexible role (We can work with your personal skills and availability). Possible duties include attendance and shepherding of children through commitment masses (approx 3 per year), preparation liturgies (approx 6 per year), as well as the preparation, coordination and celebration of the sacraments. You are not required to be available for every event and there are jobs for both up front and background work. A Working With Children’s Check (WWCC) will need to be completed for this role.
If you feel the call to give some time, please contact the Yass sacramental team for more information via email sacramentalteamyass@gmail.com or call Anne Mattappallil on 0427500429.
Please support our Parish by making regular donations.
