Walkathon
Thanks to all families for your support of last week’s Walkathon, especially those volunteers who assisted with supervision on the walk and with the BBQ lunch. It was a lovely day for a stroll; the weather could not have been much nicer. Congratulations to all students and families who helped us to reach our fundraising goal this year. The student reward for reaching this target is a Crazy Hair Day, which will be held on Tuesday 5 November, Week 4. I now ask that any outstanding sponsorship be collected and sent to school as quickly as possible.
Book Parade
Next Monday 28 October Mt Carmel School will be participating in the Yass town Book Parade. The event will begin at 9:30am with author visits at Eagle's Nest and the CWA Rooms and will be followed by reading activities in Banjo Paterson Park and the Yass Library. We will then parade through the main street to return to school for Recess at 11:20am. Students are asked to come dressed as a book character, but please do not bring props. Students should ensure that they have a hat and sunscreen and bring a water bottle. Participation in this event is at no cost to students.
Kindergarten Orientation
This morning it was very exciting to welcome our new Kinders for 2020 as they came to Mt Carmel to begin their journey to “Big School”. There are two more Kinder Orientations after this week. On Wednesday 6 November we will hold a K-2019 Parent Information Evening in the Lacey Library to provide specific information and answer questions about starting school.
Boorowa Touch Football and Netball Carnival
Best wishes to our 10 touch football and 14 netball teams as they travel to Boorowa this Friday for a great day on the sporting field; a big thank you to all the parents who have volunteered to drive, coach and manage the teams. An important reminder that, in alignment with legislative requirements, any parents transporting children other than their own to the carnival need to provide the school with their licence and registration details. Thank you to Mrs Glover for coordinating Mt Carmel’s participation in this event. The weather on Friday is forecast to be hot, so please ensure that your children have a hat, sunscreen and plenty of water. Canteen facilities are available.
Departing Students
Schools are required to record destination schools for all departing students. I ask that all families of Year 6 students inform us as soon as possible of the high school your child will be attending. In the Forms & Documents tab on the school website and app is a Year 6 2020 Destination eForm. I also request that any K-5 families moving from Mt Carmel at the end of this year send me an email (michael.green@cg.catholic.edu.au) as soon as possible indicating your intentions along with your destination. Much of this term is spent preparing for next year and our student numbers need to be accurate. Thank you for assisting us with this information gathering.
Class Placements 2020
Parents are invited to email me with regard to any considerations you may have for your child’s class placement for 2020. These considerations should be important for the education and wellbeing of your child. Requests for a particular teacher, gender of a teacher, multiple friends etc, are usually not appropriate nor a priority. It is very important for parents to understand that creating classes is detailed and exacting work completed by the teachers to ensure that your child is placed in an appropriate class group each year. When considering class groupings, teachers will look specifically at your child’s educational and social needs and place them with peers that will support their development. Requests are to be emailed to me at: michael.green@cg.catholic.edu.au by Friday 8 November 2019. Please be aware that each request will be considered separately and by no means are all requests met. Requests from previous years are not kept on file or considered, as situations change each year. If you would like a previous request to be considered again, you are asked to send in a new request for 2020.
May God’s peace be in your families,
Five Reasons to Simplify Life in Your Family
by Susan Vogt - a speaker, author of five books, and former editor of the Journal of the National Association of Catholic Family Life Ministers.
Crowded time is not good for the spirit.
Consider the frenetic life many of us lead. We may thrive on it for a while, but eventually it takes a toll not only on our health but also on our family time and on our spirit.
Too many possessions can make more work or make us lazy.
This may seem like a contradiction because much of modern technology is meant to free us of repetitive or menial tasks so that we can be more productive. Surely automatic washers and dryers free up a day that might be devoted to interaction with children. Computers speed up communication and maximise the number of people we can be in touch with. But do you find yourself washing clothes more often or getting more junk e-mail and spending more time on the Internet just because it's so easy?
On the other hand, if children have all kinds of stimulating electronic games and gadgets to occupy their free time, will they think to take a hike or create a play?
Waiting, longing, and working for something increases appreciation.
Even if we can afford many things or lavish holidays, we do our children a disservice if we provide too much. It may make us feel better for not spending time with them, but it takes away their need to stretch, to delay gratification, to savour what they have and long for something else. A toy or experience that has been “longed for” is much more appreciated. Ungrateful children usually have too much stuff.
Consuming less is a small step toward a more just world.
It just doesn't seem right that some people on our earth have much more than they need while others lack the basic necessities. Can one person living more simply make a difference? Not much. Can a family influence a society to reduce consumption so that others can have a little more? In time, step by step, yes —making our world a better place to live for all, through the actions of those who care, starting at home. The increasing gap between the rich and the poor just is not fair.
Consuming less is good for our planet.
Realistically, most of us are not going to make drastic changes in our lifestyle, but reducing unnecessary consumption can at least clear our minds and reduce the strain on air, land, and water resources.
Gospel Reading
Luke 18:1-8
Jesus urges his disciples to pray and not lose heart, for God hears and answers prayers.
Background on the Gospel Reading
Last Sunday we heard the first of two parables that Jesus tells in Luke 18 about prayer. (The second will be read at Mass next Sunday.) This first parable is a lesson in persistence in prayer. (Next Sunday's parable will address attitude in prayer.) While the parable seems to present prayer as nagging God for what we want, such a reading misses the point. God is not like the judge in the parable, worn down by requests and coerced to respond. The key is found in the description of the judge as corrupt and unjust. Since God can be neither, we must understand Jesus to be saying that if even an unjust judge responds to the persistence of the widow, how much more so will God listen to our prayers. God truly wants to hear our needs and respond generously. It is the final lament of Jesus that gets to the point of the parable. The lesson is about the persistence of the one who prays. God wants us to be like the persistent widow, staying in relationship with God, confident that God hears and answers prayers. Then Jesus laments, “Will such faith be found when the Son of Man comes?” In this expression of grief, Jesus notes how easy it can be for us to lose heart.

Boorowa Touch and Netball Carnival - Friday 25 October
Notes and booklets have been sent home this afternoon containing all information as currently available. Thank you in advance to all the parents and siblings who have volunteered to help out as team managers and referees - we really appreciate your help.
First games commence at 9.00am sharp and it is advised that all teams be at the grounds by 8.30am - this is due to the enormous amount of traffic.
All games are 20 minutes in duration and play will be continuous i.e one game finishes and the next starts.
Mobile phone reception may be limited due to the large usage and is Next G3 reception only.
Please note that the canteen at Boorowa will be CASH only.
The weather forecast is looking like it will be a warm day so please be prepared in terms of sunscreen, hats, water, shade etc. We are looking forward to a great day.

ST AUGUSTINE'S BOOK FAIR – November 2 & 3
St Augustine's Parish will be holding its annual Book Fair again this year, on the same weekend as Classic Yass (November 2 & 3). Last year’s Book Fair was highly successful and the parish hopes that with your support, this year’s can be even better. Funds this year will go to various parish building/maintenance commitments, with a proportion being directed towards Yass Rural Australians for Refugees to assist them with their valuable work.
If you’ve been putting off going through the book shelves and cupboards, now is the time to start! Donations of books, DVDs, CDs, vinyl records, games, puzzles and the like are all welcome. Donations can be accepted from now until Tuesday 29 October.
Please contact Deb Valencic at deb.valencic@gmail.com or ring or text 0427 674 246 to advise that you have goods to donate and to organise a time to drop off donations or to have them picked up.
Donations of encyclopaedias and magazines cannot be accepted this year.
