Dear Parents, Students and Teachers
Welcome to the first edition of the new-look Carmeletta, and a sincere thank you to Mrs Emma McEvoy who works tirelessly every week to publish our school newsletter.
ePublishing of the Carmeletta is part of streamlining the school’s communication with families, including the recent redevelopment of our website and adoption of a new parent communication app. This app is called SZapp and is a free download from the App Store or Google Play and will shortly replace Skoolbag. The following link will provide you with additional information about installing and activating Szapp: http://www.schoolzine.com/szapp-installation.
Welcome BBQ and Open Classrooms
Thank you to the families who have submitted their RSVP for tomorrow night's Welcome BBQ. The Community Council will be serving sausage sandwiches from 5pm.
At 5:45pm there will be a brief gathering in the PAC for a prayer and Principal’s Address, then Open Classrooms will run between 6pm and 7pm.
This year there will be no formal presentations from teachers in the classrooms, although each will have information about classroom routines and learning for Term 1. The open classroom is intended as an opportunity for your child to show you their classroom, introduce their teacher to you and share their learning so far. If you have more than one child at Mt Carmel, you can visit their classrooms in any order you like; there are no scheduled times.
Traffic Safety
This week we have received some concerning reports about traffic safety on Dutton Street. Cars have been double parking or stopping illegally in the disabled parking zone, causing some near-misses with other cars or students running between cars. Also, the length of Dutton St from the school office to the Meehan St intersection is a no parking zone before and after school, so you can use these spaces to drop-off or pick up, but if you leave your vehicle, you may be booked. Police will be doing regular checks.
Parent Reading Information Sessions
Next Thursday Trish O’Dell, our Classroom Support Teacher, will be hosting two information sessions for parents to find out how to best help your child with reading at home. The sessions will be held at 9.30am and 7pm in our Professional Learning Room, upstairs in the office building.
Northern Region Swimming Carnival
Mt Carmel was represented by 28 students at last Friday’s Northern Region Swimming Carnival in Queanbeyan. My sincere congratulations to all students who participated so well; I am extremely proud of you all. From this event, 20 Mt Carmel students have been selected to represent the Northern Region at the Archdiocesan Swimming Carnival in Narooma on Monday 4 March. Congratulations to you all.
May God’s peace be in your families,
He then came down with them and stopped at a piece of level ground where there was a large gathering of his disciples, with a great crowd of people from all parts of Judaea and Jerusalem and the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon. Then fixing his eyes on his disciples he said: How blessed are you who are poor: the kingdom of God is yours. Blessed are you who are hungry now: you shall have your fill. Blessed are you who are weeping now: you shall laugh. 'Blessed are you when people hate you, drive you out, abuse you, denounce your name as criminal, on account of the Son of man. Rejoice when that day comes and dance for joy, look!-your reward will be great in heaven. This was the way their ancestors treated the prophets. But alas for you who are rich: you are having your consolation now. Alas for you who have plenty to eat now: you shall go hungry. Alas for you who are laughing now: you shall mourn and weep. 'Alas for you when everyone speaks well of you! This was the way their ancestors treated the false prophets.
REFLECTION
In this Gospel, Jesus tells his disciples: “Blessed are you who are poor. Blessed are you who are hungry. Blessed are you who are weeping. Blessed are you when people hate you, insult you, and denounce your name as evil.” Now honestly ask yourself: do you consider yourself blessed when you experience poverty, hunger, or other trials? Do you feel blessed if someone hates or dislikes you?
I doubt that any of us feel blessed when we have pain, sorrow, loss and confusion in our lives. It is more likely we may feel cursed or betrayed. We may be sad, afraid, or angry with God. Yet Jesus tells us to rejoice and to leap for joy on that day. He reassures us that we will have a great reward in heaven. However, this assurance most likely will not ease the pain, the sorrow, or the suffering we may be experiencing.
Jesus then continues with the “woes.” He says: “Woe to the rich, you have received your consolation. Woe to you whose bellies are filled, you will go hungry. Woe to you who laugh now; you will grieve and weep. Woe to you when people speak well of you, for their ancestors treated the prophets in this way.”
It is easy to take our blessings for granted until the difficult times come and we begin to experience the woes of life. Now take a moment and ask yourself: Do you consider it a blessing when you are hungry for love, joy, hope, companionship, spiritual nourishment, or (fill in the blank)? Or at these times do you feel abandoned by God or angry with Jesus? During painful and difficult times, it is almost natural to lose sight of the many ways we also are blessed. If we are struggling and in pain, our focus immediately shifts to the difficult or the frightening aspects of life.
Yet, even when we experience “woes”, we are blessed. We may have a spouse, children, grandchildren, siblings, our Church community, a religious community, as well as other people who love and care for us. Hopefully, we have a roof over our heads and enough food on the table. And even during our times of woe, God is right beside us. However, we may not always feel God’s presence. And hopefully, during the woeful times, we have the family and friends who love and care for us.
When we are struggling with the woes, it may be helpful to sit down and focus on the blessings we are experiencing at this time. This may give us some perspective. We may realize that even though life may not be what we would like it to be, we receive many blessings every single day. True, they may seem like small blessings: a smile, a phone call from a friend, the beauty of the sunset or a hug from someone you love, but they still are blessings.
When you are in the woes of life, look for beauty, laughter, or quiet, or ask God for a hug! Who knows: you may be surprised what gift you may receive! (Sr Kristine Anne Harpenau)
God Bless,
