Dear Parents, Teachers and Students,
Today is Ash Wednesday, the day that marks the start of the season of Lent – a time of prayer, almsgiving and fasting in preparation for the celebration of Easter. Ash Wednesday comes from the ancient Jewish tradition of penance and fasting. The practice includes the wearing of ashes on the forehead. The ashes symbolise the dust from which God made us. We began our school day today with a prayer assembly, led by 5/6WZ, and students have received ashes on their foreheads as a symbol of humility and penance.
Project Compassion, Caritas Australia’s annual Lenten appeal has begun and we encourage each family to contribute to this appeal via the Project Compassion Box that your child will be bringing home today. While there is no obligation for primary-school-aged children to fast, many will be familiar with the idea of giving something up for Lent, however this is also a time of reflection of where we can listen to God’s word and follow his call through our loving actions. Lent is the perfect time to commit ourselves to a positive action for the good of others.
Shrove Tuesday
Thank you to the teachers, parents and student leaders who came to school early yesterday to help prepare and serve our annual pancake breakfast. A special thank you to Claire Pholi and Deb Quarrell for joining in with staff to cook the pancakes. The Pancake Race was proudly run by our Student Representative Council with the winners being the Fielding House – Congratulations!
Archdiocesan Swimming in Narooma
Well done to all of the students who were selected to represent Mt Carmel at the Archdiocesan Swimming Carnival in Narooma on Monday. Several personal bests were achieved on the day – an outstanding effort by all participants. Congratulations to Tahlia Wullaert, Emily Ryan, Charlie Jamieson and Luke Hewlett who will be competing at the next level of the competition, the CPS Swimming in Homebush. Good luck!
Assembly
Our first K-6 Assembly will be this Friday following morning lines in the Performing Arts Centre. This has been kindly prepared by 1EK and 4EG and we look forward to seeing your classes perform their items. The first Principal Awards for the year will be presented at this Assembly.
May God’s peace be in your families,

Assistant Principal
GOSPEL: Luke 6:39-45
He also told them a parable, 'Can one blind person guide another? Surely both will fall into a pit? Disciple is not superior to teacher; but fully trained disciple will be like teacher. Why do you observe the splinter in your brother's eye and never notice the great log in your own? How can you say to your brother, "Brother, let me take out that splinter in your eye," when you cannot see the great log in your own? Hypocrite! Take the log out of your own eye first, and then you will see clearly enough to take out the splinter in your brother's eyes. 'There is no sound tree that produces rotten fruit, nor again a rotten tree that produces sound fruit. Every tree can be told by its own fruit: people do not pick figs from thorns, nor gather grapes from brambles. Good people draw what is good from the store of goodness in their hearts; bad people draw what is bad from the store of badness. For the words of the mouth flow out of what fills the heart.
REFLECTION
In this week’s Gospel, Jesus continues his teaching and formation of the apostles. Today Jesus is inviting us to become aware of how quickly we may jump to judgment of another person. At times, judgment of another person comes so automatically that we may not even consciously recognize it. Jesus may simply want us to be aware of what is going on in our minds. Once we are aware, then we have a choice about what action or attitude we want to take.
It is much easier to see the splinter in another person's eye than to recognise the splinter in my own eye. Perhaps recognising the splinter in the other person’s eye makes us feel better about ourselves. Jesus is reminding us to be mindful! Our mind often jumps to judgment before we even are consciously aware of it. However, when we become aware of the judgment we are making, we can decide to let go of the judgment — or not! Today may we strive to be more consciously aware of what is going on in our minds and hearts. (Sr Kristine Anne Harpenau)
ASH WEDNESDAY
Ash Wednesday is one of the most popular and important holy days in the liturgical calendar. Ash Wednesday opens Lent, a season of fasting and prayer.
Ash Wednesday takes place 46 days before Easter Sunday, and is chiefly observed by Catholics, although many other Christians observe it too.
Ash Wednesday comes from the ancient Jewish tradition of penance and fasting. The practice includes the wearing of ashes on the head. The ashes symbolise the dust from which God made us. As the priest applies the ashes to a person's forehead, he speaks the words: "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return."
Ashes also symbolise grief, in this case, grief that we have sinned and caused division from God.
Writings from the Second-century Church refer to the wearing of ashes as a sign of penance.
Priests administer ashes during Mass and all are invited to accept the ashes as a visible symbol of penance. Even non-Christians and the excommunicated are welcome to receive the ashes. The ashes are made from blessed palm branches, taken from the previous year's palm Sunday Mass.
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Season of Lent. It is a season of penance, reflection, and fasting which prepares us for Christ's Resurrection on Easter Sunday, through which we attain redemption. (Catholic Online)
PROJECT COMPASSION
Today all students will receive a Project Compassion box. Project Compassion is Caritas Australia's annual Lenten fundraising and awareness-raising appeal. Millions of Australians come together in solidarity with the world's poor to help end poverty, promote justice and uphold dignity. This year the theme for Project Compassion is 100% Hope. There is a class box in each classroom so let us give up something we would like this Lenten season and help others.
God Bless,
