Dear Parents, Teachers and Students,
2021 Student Leaders
It is my pleasure to congratulate the following students who, following a comprehensive selection process, have been appointed as Student Leaders for 2021:
School Captains - Lachlan Brown and Charlotte Alexander
Vice Captains - Digby Connell-Hewlett and Neve Luckie
Year 6 SRC Representatives - Fergus Green and Elliott Barnes
Fielding House - William Hall and Clare Broers
Hartigan House - Declan Gourlay and Skye Edwards
McAuley House - Archer Lees and Lola White
Mullungang House - Charlie Miller and Anna Samperi
There was a very strong field of candidates who put themselves forward for consideration and, although everyone cannot be successful in this process, each student represented themselves with immense pride for their school, teachers and classmates and will no doubt show their leadership potential in other ways as Year 6 Leaders in 2021.
Term Dates 2021
At the beginning of next year, Catholic Education is holding a System Day for staff professional development on Thursday 28 January, which was due to be the first day of Term 1 for students. Rather than have students return to school for just one day at the end of the week, Mt Carmel School will be moving one of our regular Staff Professional Development days from later in the year to Friday 29 January. This means that all students, K-6 will commence Term 1 on Monday 1 February. Term 1 concludes on Thursday 1 April.
Presentation Night and Graduation
Given the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, we are unable to hold our Presentation Night in its usual form this year; instead, we will be holding a Presentation Week in Week 9. Academic, Effort and Application, Most Improved and Christian Leadership Awards will be presented at morning assembly to Year 3 students on Monday, Year 4 students on Wednesday and Year 5 students on Thursday. Parents of award recipients will be personally invited to attend the assembly to see the presentation of their child's award. All award recipients will be acknowledged in a special edition of the Carmeletta in Week 10.
Also due to COVID-19 restrictions, we are unable to hold our usual whole-school End-of-Year and Graduation Mass. We will still be holding a Graduation Mass on Tuesday 15 December, Week 10, but it will be for Year 6 students and one accompanying parent only. At the conclusion of the Mass, Year 6 Academic, Leadership and Citizenship Awards will be announced. Recipients will receive their awards in the PAC after Mass. A letter with full details of our Year 6 Graduation and celebrations is coming to families today.
Uniform Shop Additional Opening Times
The Uniform Shop will be open from 10am to 3:30pm on Monday 7 December and Monday 14 December, in addition to the usual Tuesdays 2:30-4pm.
Christ our Hope,
Shine in our lives with hope and promise. Open our eyes to see you in others. Help us to be people of hope.
We await your coming with gratitude.
Amen
Advent begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas and this week is the first week of Advent. 1EK led a short Advent Prayer Service this morning.
Gospel, Mark 13:33-37
The key message of this passage is to ‘Watch’ and to welcome Christ into our life during Advent. He is here already but he wants to come closer.
Reflection
How can I keep in touch with God and others?
How can I prepare for the coming of the Lord?
Religious Education in the Classroom
Teachers and students have been engaging critically and creatively with Scripture passages through The Three Worlds of the Text: World Behind the Text, World of the Text, and World In Front of the Text. This teaching and learning method encourages students to learn from within the Bible and discover their own informed interpretation. Below is a short description of what the World in Front of the Text means.
Below are photographs of students engaging in World in Front of the Text activities.
Parable of the Sower Mark 4:1-10. What does this mean to us today? How are people like seeds? What behaviours, attitudes, thoughts would reflect the different environments mentioned in the text? Who/what is the seed? Who/what is the ground? Who/What is the sower? What are the 4 types of ground if we are thinking about people?
Genesis 2:4-25
Enjoy your week!
May peace be with you,
Eva Karakotas
Religious Education Coordinator (Acting)
We will be commencing our annual book stoctake on Monday next week. Any students that have library books at home, please return them as soon as possible.
Borrowing from the Library has now closed for the year, but children can still borrow via Overdrive-Sora over the holidays.
