Dear Parents, Teachers and Students,
ANZAC Day
Thanks to 2AH for their preparation and presentation of our ANZAC Day liturgy on Friday, and a very special thank you to our school captains who came to the ceremony on Sunday to represent our school. I’m sure that families in attendance would have noticed that, unfortunately, and due to an error by the supplier, the captains did not have a wreath to present on the day. I would like to commend Charlotte and Lachlan for the maturity with which they coped with this disappointment and am pleased to let the community know that our captains were able to return to the Cenotaph on Monday to respectfully lay a wreath on the school’s behalf. It is my sincere hope that no offence has been caused to anyone in our community.
2022 Enrolments
Our enrolment drive for 2022 has already begun. The official enrolment period for Catholic Schools in this Archdiocese commences in May. If you have a pre-school child ready for Kindergarten, it’s time to enrol now. The Catholic Education Canberra Goulburn online enrolment form can be accessed by clicking the link below. If you need to access a hard-copy form, please contact the Front Office. An interview will be organised once the enrolment application is received. If your friends have a child starting in Kindergarten next year, please encourage them to consider Mt Carmel as an option for their children’s education. We will be conducting Open Day tours and holding a Parent Information session in May.

School Photos
School photos will take place on Monday 10 May (Week 4); students are to wear their full winter uniform, including jumper. Photo order envelopes will be distributed shortly; family photo envelopes will be available from the front office, if required.
Students Arriving Late and Departing Early
I would like to call parents’ attention to a matter relating to our duty of care and legal record-keeping requirements. When students arrive late to school or are leaving early for an appointment, a parent or care-giver must come to the school office to sign their child in or out. Thank you, in advance, for your cooperation.
NAPLAN
The annual National Assessment Program—Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will be held in Week 4. Year 3 and Year 5 students will be completing the Assessments online, with the exception of Year 3 Writing, which will be completed with pencil and paper. We will be treating participation in NAPLAN as just another day at school. Please don’t feel the need to do anything at home in preparation for your child’s participation in NAPLAN; a good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast are the best assistance you can provide to help your child perform at their best. If you have a child in Year 3 or Year 5 and have any questions about NAPLAN, please feel free to contact their classroom teacher.
Prayers, Please
Mrs Harvey, our Assistant Principal and Music Teacher, has asked me to let the school community know that she is taking extended leave to care for a serious health concern. I ask you to join me in praying for Jan and for her full and speedy recovery.
GOSPEL: John 10:11-18
I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep. The hired man, since he is not the shepherd and the sheep do not belong to him, abandons the sheep as soon as he sees a wolf coming, and runs away, and then the wolf attacks and scatters the sheep; he runs away because he is only a hired man and has no concern for the sheep. I am the good shepherd; I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for my sheep. And there are other sheep I have that are not of this fold, and I must lead these too. They too will listen to my voice, and there will be only one flock, one shepherd. The Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again. No one takes it from me; I lay it down of my own free will, and as I have power to lay it down, so I have power to take it up again; and this is the command I have received from my Father.
REFLECTION
In this week's reading from the 4th Sunday of Easter, we hear the “Good Shepherd” Gospel. As we know, any good shepherd is serious about the responsibility of caring for the flock of sheep. Sheep don’t have much sense or caution. Perhaps they simply are too trusting. Sheep also have a tendency to wander off from the flock!
Today Jesus identifies himself as the “good shepherd.” The good shepherd does everything within his power to protect his sheep. If needed, the good shepherd will even lay down his life for his sheep. The shepherd who is a hired hand may run away when there is any danger to the sheep. He simply is working for his salary and if a predator approaches, he likely will protect himself and leave the sheep on their own. The hired hand often values his own life more than the sheep he is responsible for, even though he committed himself to protecting the sheep.
This is not true of Jesus! Jesus, as we well know, loved us so intensely that he was willing to give up his life for us, his sheep! Jesus died so that we might live! Truly, there is no greater love! (Sr Kristine Anne Harpenau)
