Dear Parents, Teachers and Students,
Walk Safely to School Day
This Friday is National Walk Safely to School Day and Mt Carmel is encouraging as many families as possible to participate. If there is anyone who lives too far from school to walk the whole way but would still like to participate, we will be hosting a “Walking School Bus”. We will meet at the Liberty Theatre corner from 8am, and at 8:15am we will walk down the main street, crossing Meehan St at the lights, up Rossi Street and then enter school via the Rossi St Gate. Parents and families are welcome to join in; no bikes or scooters, please.
Years 3 and 5 students yesterday commenced NAPLAN Online and, although there were a few connectivity issues, both have completed Writing and Reading, and Year 5 have completed Conventions of Language. Tomorrow Year 3 will complete Conventions of Language and Year 5 will complete Numeracy. Year 3 will finish off with Numeracy on Monday next week. If students have been away, we have until Friday next week to sit catch-up tests.
Dutton Street Update
A reminder to all families using Dutton Street as a drop off/pick up zone to be patient and especially mindful of traffic and pedestrian safety while the footpath upgrade is proceeding. If at all possible, I ask families to consider alternative arrangements to reduce congestion at the front of the school. To view the Dutton Street Safety Plan, click here.
Lost Property
Autumn is always prime time for lost property at school: the mornings are chilly then, as the sun gains strength, jumpers come off and are inevitably left on the playground. Any item of lost property with a discernible name is always returned promptly to its owner, but there is a hefty pile of jumpers and sports jackets at the office with no name. Please help us (and your bank balance) by ensuring that all items of uniform — especially those items that may be taken off through the day — are clearly labelled with your child’s name.
Athletics Carnival
The Mt Carmel School Athletics Carnival has been scheduled for Friday 4 June, Week 7, at Victoria Park. At this stage, pending no changes in COVID-19 restrictions, parents and families will be welcome as spectators and volunteers. Further details can be found in Mr Dunstan’s Sports Report.
2022 Enrolments — Open Days and Parent Information Evening
Our enrolment drive for 2022 is well underway — the official enrolment period for Catholic Schools in this Archdiocese runs for the month of May. If you have a pre-school child ready for Kindergarten, it’s time to enrol now. Catholic Education Canberra Goulburn has an online enrolment form, which can be accessed by clicking the link below. If you need to access a hard-copy form, please contact the Front Office. An enrolment interview will be organised once the application is received. If your friends have a child starting in Kindergarten next year, please encourage them to consider Mt Carmel as an option for their children’s education.
We will be holding Open Day Tours for interested families on Tuesday 18 and Wednesday 19 May (Week 5) at 10am, 12pm and 2pm, guided by our Student Leaders. Our K-2022 Parent Information Evening will be held on the evening of Wednesday 19 May at 7pm in the Lacey Library.

GOSPEL: John 15:9-17
I have loved you just as the Father has loved me. Remain in my love. If you keep my commandments you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my own joy may be in you and your joy be complete. This is my commandment: love one another, as I have loved you. No one can have greater love than to lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends, if you do what I command you. I shall no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know the master's business; I call you friends, because I have made known to you everything I have learnt from my Father. You did not choose me, no, I chose you; and I commissioned you to go out and to bear fruit, fruit that will last; so that the Father will give you anything you ask him in my name. My command to you is to love one another.
REFLECTION
The Scripture scholars who put together the cycle of readings for the daily readings must have thought we need to hear this passage from John once again. We heard this portion of this passage from John this past Thursday and Friday. However, it may be important that we listen and reflect on these words once again. Do you remember what your thoughts were on this passage a few days ago?
This week I invite you to slowly reread this passage and then choose one word or phrase that speaks to you or draws your attention. Then take some time to quietly sit with those words for a few moments. In the quiet, have an open mind and heart and wait patiently. Let your word or phrase speak to you. Try not to “think” too much. Rather, listen with your heart!
After a time, ask yourself: what is this word or phrase saying to me? Jesus is speaking to you in these few short words. What do you hear him saying to you? Listen with an open mind and heart for 5-10 minutes. Jesus will speak but it may not be in words! Simply listen! Be patient! (Sr Kristine Anne Harpenau)
God Bless,
