Dear Parents, Teachers and Students,
Open Classrooms
A final reminder that we will be holding our Open Classrooms this afternoon from 3:30pm to 5:30pm. You are warmly invited to come with your child to visit their classroom and share in the wonderful work that they have been doing this semester. Please be mindful that, although your child’s teacher will be in the classroom and is very happy to chat with you, open classrooms are not the appropriate forum for individual parent-teacher interviews. Parents are always welcome to make an individual appointment with their child’s teacher any time they would like to discuss their child’s progress.
This Friday you will receive your child’s Semester One Report. This is a wonderful opportunity to take time with your child to sit and talk about the learning they have undertaken so far this year. Celebrate their successes and help them work out strategies for the areas that may need further development. Teachers commit significant hours outside of school time to prepare our children’s reports; I am very grateful for the dedicated teaching staff we have here at Mt Carmel.
Rostrum Public Speaking
Congratulations to Mia Buser who, last night, represented Mt Carmel at the Rostrum Public Speaking quarter final at the Soldiers Club. Mia spoke on the topic, I took a risk, and will now progress to the Semi-Final after placing first. Well done, Mia!
CEO Sleepout
Last Thursday I completed the Vinnies CEO Sleepout at what is now unofficially known as the Arbrrretum (thanks, Mrs Green!) in Canberra— it was a very chilly night on a wind-swept hilltop. I’m extremely grateful to everyone who sponsored my participation, raising just a little under $5000 to help Vinnies provide much-needed support to those experiencing homelessness in our region. Collectively, the Catholic Education team, made up of Catholic primary and secondary principals and office staff—including the Director—were the second-highest team fundraisers for the event, raising almost $47000 for Vinnies and contributing to a record for the Canberra-Goulburn region of more than one million dollars!
Commonwealth Schools Data Collection
Each year, the Australian Government Department of Education, Skills and Employment (DESE) collects a range of student, staff and financial data from Australian schools to help inform funding and policy decisions and to meet national and international reporting obligations. Attached to this newsletter is a letter to families from DESE explaining the data collection process, for your information.
Principal News
I’m very happy to announce to the school community that, following a recent Principal Performance Review, my contract as Principal of Mt Carmel School has been renewed. I consider myself to be truly blessed to live and work in this wonderful community, and I look forward to continuing my work at Mt Carmel. I would like to express my gratitude to all Mt Carmel's teaching and support staff for their tireless dedication to our school, and special thanks go to all of your beautiful children, who fill our classrooms and playground with such joy every day.
Happy Holidays
Please note that students return to school on Tuesday 13 July in their sports uniform. Thank you to everyone for their wonderful work this term. Staff, students and parents have worked incredibly hard and these efforts are very much appreciated. I trust that everyone will have a restful and enjoyable mid-year break. Travel safely, if you are going away, and stay warm. I respectfully ask all families who are travelling during the holiday period to pay attention to NSW Health COVID advice and respond accordingly.
And if anyone’s looking for some holiday reading and viewing, check out the attached review of The Illuminated Adventures of Flora and Ulysses, by Kate DiCamillo, which has been made into a movie that’s available to stream on Disney Plus. Mackenzie Kline in 5/6EG has read the book and seen the movie and is keen to share her opinion. Thanks, Mackenzie! Click here, to read this review.
I look forward to seeing you in Term 3.
May God’s peace be in your families,
Michael Green
Principal

Religious Education in the Classroom
KNB visited Lovatt Chapel to provoke their interest about different prayer spaces and become familiar with praying in a chapel. Students loved the vibrant colours of the stained glass windows and asked many questions about the special items they saw in the chapel. Then students attended Parish Mass with their Year 5/6TD buddies.
Gospel, Mark 4:35-41
https://www.catholic.org/bible/daily_reading/?select_date=2021-06-20
In this passage, the disciples are facing a storm they thought they would not survive and they were ready to give up. Jesus uses his faith to bring his disciples through the storm safely.
Reflection
The passage invites us to come to terms with our fears, to not give up, and work through the challenges.
How can I overcome fear?
How can I use my faith to guide me through difficult times?
Wishing you all a safe and happy holiday!
May peace be with you,
Eva Karakotas
