Dear Parents, Teachers and Students,
Book Week
This Friday we will be holding our virtual Book Week parade, commencing at 9:30am, via Teams. A link will be sent to families via Compass on Friday morning. For parents who are able to tune in live, the approximate times will be as follows: Kindergarten — 9:30am, Year 1 — 9:45am, Year 2 — 9:55am, Year 3 — 10:10am, Year 4 — 10:25am, Year 5/6 — 10:35am. The parade will be recorded, for those who are unable to view the live event.
As part of the day’s celebrations, students will be provided with a sausage-sizzle lunch; all dietary needs will be catered for. The school canteen will be open for recess and lunch orders as usual.
World Teachers’ Day
World Teachers’ Day is celebrated in Australia on the last Friday in October. It is an opportunity to recognise, celebrate and thank the dedicated and hard-working teachers who help our children learn and grow. I am conscious of the cliché, but teaching truly is a noble profession and, as both a parent and a school principal, I am grateful every day for the generosity, talent, patience, commitment and, above all, love that our wonderful teachers bring to their work. I encourage every student at Mt Carmel to take the time to personally thank their teacher on Friday.
Student Leadership
Next Friday, nominations open for Year 5 students who are seeking formal leadership positions in 2022; that is, School Captains, Vice-Captains, House Captains and SRC Representatives. At Mt Carmel, our student leaders are appointed, not elected, and the process begins with students completing a nomination form addressing a selection criteria. These forms must be submitted by Friday 12 November, Week 6. Nominees then present a speech to the school in Week 7 and meet with an interview panel in Week 8. The panel will then decide on appointments, taking into consideration each nominee’s interview, application and feedback from students and teachers (via voting slips, following the speeches). I wish all who are considering nominating for these positions the very best.
Staffing News
After five years working in the Mt Carmel School community as a Classroom Teacher, Aboriginal Contact Teacher and Religious Education Coordinator, Mr Warren Ziebowski will be leaving us next year to take up the position of Religious Education Coordinator at St Mary’s Primary School in Young. I am very grateful to Warren for his dedication and professionalism and wish him all the very best in his new endeavours.
Kindergarten Orientation
Kindergarten Orientation commences next Wednesday and, to comply with COVID restrictions, we will be having staggered start times to minimise the number of parents on site. Start times will be provided via email this week. If you need to confirm your child’s start time, or any other details about orientation, please contact the school office.
School Banking
The Commonwealth Bank have announced this week that their long-running school banking program will cease at the end of this year. Mt Carmel has not been conducting school banking since the Term 3 COVID lockdown so, given the relatively short time remaining until the program ceases, we will not recommence school banking this term. Any student who has collected 10 tokens should submit them to the school office by the end of November in order to claim their banking reward.
You can continue to make deposits into your child’s Youthsaver account through online transfer or at any Commonwealth Bank branch. If you need further information regarding your child’s bank account, please phone 132 221, or visit a Commonwealth Bank branch.
Lanyon Excursion
Last term, most of our Year 3 and 4 cohort attended an excursion to Lanyon as part of a History unit. Unfortunately, a final group was unable to attend the excursion before the COVID lockdown and there is now, under current restrictions, no prospect that this group we will be able to attend the excursion this year. All affected families who payed for the excursion in advance will receive a refund against this term’s fee statement.
Tomorrow we will be holding our final Socktober event: a Sockball House Spirit Challenge. If you have made a sock ball at home from recycled materials, bring it to school tomorrow; if you haven’t yet made one, it’s not too late. Go to https://www.socktober.org.au/socktober-shootout for a video on how to make your own sockball.
May God’s peace be in your families,
Religious Education in the Classroom
Welcome to Week 4! Year 5 and Year 6 students have started their Religious Education unit of work by watching ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’.
This provocation was used to generate interest in the Holy Trinity: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Provocations encourage students to think independently by encouraging their interests and the exploration of those interests.
Task: Students were asked to draw parallels between the story and the Holy Trinity.
Students made the following comparisons:
Father - The Emperor across the sea, who created the “Deep Magic” in Narnia, is like God.
Son - Aslan was killed, but then he rose from the dead just like Jesus did, the stone he lay on, broke, and he was no longer there laying on the stone dead. He had risen. So, as stated, Aslan clearly represents Jesus and his leadership and courage. But also the events that had happened in Jesus’ life.
Holy Spirit - The “Deep Magic” that runs through Narnia that determines right from wrong.
Narnia conveys very explicit messages in the movie referring straight back to things that Jesus and God have done and the Holy Spirit does. For example, Aslan has the power to heal people, guide people and show the right and wrong that lie in our way. Aslan represents Jesus when at night he leaves on his own and willingly to where he will get killed, tortured, humiliated and lie on the stone tied up. At that point of time Aslan could easily have fought back, run away and not been killed. However, he shows bravery and leadership towards his friends and people of Narnia.
This Thursday, 28 October, Mt Carmel School will experience how some of their brothers and sisters around the world play the game of soccer using sockballs. Students are invited to make a sockball using recycled materials and to bring it to school on Thursday 28 October 2021.

Prayer and Reflection
Let us be still and ask the Holy Spirit to be with us.
Dear Father,
Be with us as we pray.
Open our ears to hear your Word in the Gospel.
Unite us in faith, hope and love as we pray together.
Send your Holy Spirit to inspire and sustain us in our mission.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
I invite you to participate in a 3 minute prayer reflecting on a Scripture passage.

Mt Carmel School is celebrating CBCA Book Week this week.
The Children’s Book Council of Australia has shortlisted the 2021 books from a large selection of books. Each class from K-6 has been assigned a book to study. Students will then create a display based on the book for exhibition in the Lacey Library during Book Week.
A Teams Parade where parents can watch from home or work will now take place in the library from 9.30am.
A link to the parade will be provided on Friday morning to all parents via Compass.
Children have been asked to bring the book with them when they parade.
Dress Up: The children are encouraged to dress up as a book character for the day. They can use the clothes they have at home and change them slightly. They do not have to buy a costume but if you wish to that’s your choice.
The school will be providing a sausage sizzle sandwich for all the students for lunch, after the book parade. Dietary requirements will be catered for.
We are hoping for a lovely day on Friday as we celebrate children's literature at Mt Carmel School.

Now that children are back at school across NSW,
please remember to take extra care on our roads:
* Look out for kids walking or riding to school
* Stick to the 40km/h speed limit in school zones
* Be ready to stop for pedestrians and follow directions from school crossing supervisors
* Always check your blind spots when reversing from a driveway or parking near schools
* Be aware of increased congestion around drop off and pick up areas
* Leave plenty of space around school buses
Keep our kids safe. They're counting on you.
